The ending itself isn't bad and his final choice in love is ok and understandable . What are your opinions?
It's still a pretty big cliché that I dislike since in most Korean reincarnation novels, they end up ignoring their original lover (usually of humbler origin) to end up with the most good looking /rich/influential as partner.
But I really felt betrayed with what the members of the starling party ended up doing, Was it only me?:
Ronde ends up randomly becoming a teacher.
Romantica went from being a battle mage /merchant of great skill, from an independent country ,with a mercenary group under her ,to being the empire's modist .She said she wanted to continue using the influence created and the mercenary group she founded rebuilding and helping the world. How is being a modist supposed to help in a post war world (That was only the dream of her paralel self).
Pram who is simple minded and peaceful (yet he had strong ideals),ends up being the sword of the empire .He was only with the empire to be with Desir ,since the felt in his debt .But I recall he wished to part after the war
Adjest is now powerful enough to be independent and leave the empire to search for strength or a normal life (I really thought she didn't wish for the crown and might leave it to purse Desir).
Lastly Desir falls in many contradictions. I was really looking forward to him reclaiming the eroded territory and seeing what he'd do in the future .
But I felt as if the author didn't want to betray anyone and in the end Desir didn't choose weather to be in the kings-guard or the master of the tower or chasing Adjest (King consort/ political position in the empite) .All those three options are incompatible with each other. I felt completely betrayed since he kept being the tower master, but ended up under the empire. He only chose to leave the ministry of education .
I found it almost offensive that, they weren't exploring with him .Especially after neither Romantica's mercenaries (She's also had good ranger abilities) nor Pram nor Adjest were with him exploring the eroded regions. We didn't even get to see if he told them he was a returner or not.

I got bored of this novel partway through, would you mind telling me in a spoiler bracket what happens with the romance in this novel?

on the celebration of the of the empire there si a slight advance with Adjest when he learns about the divination magic (they are separated from the group and get an hour together). In the shadow world homunculus ark ,he is mostly with Romantica and the bond quite well after being alone for days (she even starts acting more relaxed near him).
After that it's full on the war with the outers ,an interlude and then all out war against Divide Kingdom. Pram and Swan Katerina play quite a big role ,and she (Swan Katerina) becomes a bit obsessed with him /her mentor .Desir does get some time with Ajest after she is thrashed by the barbarian king and when she gets the centre of ice artefact (all of the team is with them but only desir can withstand the centre of ice's cold) .
Not much romance in the war ark, but lots of action .Desir usually goes alone Pram /Romantica are a team and Ajest usually separates and is usually beaten unconscious by the hominculus/Pierot mask for no reason . After the war with the outers ,Ajest is less and less active with the party and separates when she is officially introduced as the crown princess (When she's taken away ,Desir escorts her and we get a nice moment of him telling her not to give up and stopping her confession ).
At some point before the final battle (of divide /skull mask) there is an interlude .Romantica creates a mercenary group and Desir joins with Pram/sideguard and they coordinate to stop most shadow worlds. He uses this as an excuse to recruit all the surviving strong groups from the previous shadow world. (Some died in war/ come from Divide) .This is supposed to take place in several months.
The remaining countries come together for a final battle against Divide Ajest rejoins he fray. The author randomly ditches Desir and Adjest into the shadow labyrinth (he tells her and the rest(I don't remember the order) he'll expilan everything when it finishes).The beast of Origin is released into the real world (It's taken down by a coordinated effort of all (inclusing divide)). Ajedst randomly gets strong enough to be in the vanguard.
Adjest separates again ,and they look for the Pierot for months and study the artefacts left .We get to know what ARTEMIS is
Lastly more or less like I said Desir (and the rest of the starling party) chose Ajest and the empire over all. (I found it a bit strange since she fights almost all the time alone and in more than a year they only see each other for a whole day if you put all the moments (incuding fights) together ).And most of it is him cheering her up after he is beat down. We get to know a more from her through Swan Katerina than from herself. (And he also does this with the rest of his allies (Pram also gets thrashed but I couldn't remember when,Zod,alies ...)). And we dont get a crear explanation ar why he stops liking Romentica

Priscila and the church kill Zod and there is a final battle ,with them (Adjest gets the most random power up ever) and Desir says the "A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special " before blowing up her body (she lives through artiemis)

I was really hoping Romantica was the love interest. I hate it when a rebirth story ends with the male MC 'upgrading' to a new girl as if his romance in his last life doesn't matter.

I wish I could disagree, but you're totally right .
Even though the world the author created is great, and he manages to expand it more after were you left .He(author) concludes most of the stuff rather well, but pace changes are a fatal flaw ,and he totally ditches the: "there were various races" and "Desir wasn't the first returner" .That are hinted though the whole novel in the last ark. 😢 I mean most, of the strong monsters can speak and appear in recent shadow worlds, but not in the present.

The end game boost to the enemies also leaves a terrible aftertaste .I mean all except Desir are barely making the cut, and they all randomly win just to have this "all for the empire happy ending").
