WTF
now i'm getting mad at the author

there is a charecter in it that is using an attack just like
Byakuya from bleach

http://www.onemanga.com/Psyren/58/01/

http://www.onemanga.com/Psyren/58/08/

the author isn't being creative enough

i was kind of happy to see how the dvd they found was a recorded future that would change if ageha and them changed it

and also yes it does remind me of akira now that u mention it
special children with psychic ability

I WILL KEEP READING BECUZ I HAVE FAITH IN IT>
THE DAY I STOP READING IS THE DAY I LOOSE FAITH IN THE MANGA+++

I think most of the attacks/powers in Psyren are original enough, save for a few like the swords one...

As for similarities to Bleach and etc, it's really not that bad. Agiha might remind you a bit of Ichigo, but try reading Fairy Tail...

Natsu is Luffy in both looks and personality. Only his powers are different. It's an alternate universe where Luffy ate Ace's devil fruit. I still like the manga though.

Byakuya's attack starts shattered then goes solid. This goes the completely opposite direction. Not that the idea was original to Bleach. This is a pretty common attack if you ask me.

If you want complete originality, you'll get something abstract. Probably wont end up being the best story ever. You gotta know when it's acceptable to use cliche aspects.

I didn't like how it changed at first, because it's screwy with time travel like that. If nothing else, I'll read it to determine the time travel model that the author is using.

special children with psychic ability

They're not special. They're just unleashed. Anyone can do it. bigrazz
I'm not sure how common this aspect is, but it makes the world that much more awesome.

every other manga has a main charecter with at least one trait that sticks out about them to make it at least that much original.
but i can't find one single trait about ageha yoshina that sticks out about him.

You might revisit page one. He's an experienced fighter. ...Though you may have meant an original aspect about him but not have said it. As far as that aspect of originality goes, if this is the only manga you know of where the main character is "plain," then wouldn't that "make it at least that much original," as opposed to making is unoriginal? It's almost as if you mean to give a strict rubric of what makes something original...

For me, it isn't - nor should it be - about the main character. I don't judge books by their cover. No, I actually judge by title. (Well, suffice it to say, my judgment process is a work in progress.) If the title is the name of a character, then it wont interest me. If it isn't, then it might interest me. I then proceed to read the description and judge it by that. bigrazz

For me, it's more about the concept than anything else, but the characters matter too. I just don't place emphasis on the main character much at all. It's like saying that Bleach is only about Ichigo. I'd venture to say he's not in half of the later chapters with how big the cast of characters has gotten. I can barely keep up. I can only recognize half of their names by hearing them, and the other half by seeing who responds when a name is used. If it had only followed Ichigo around all the time, it'd be a lot less interesting.

Oh who am I kidding?

first of all everyone is saying the same thing.
so please read the previous post from others before you post.

well everything that yu've said i have already pretty much thought of

like i said its not whats original that matters
what matters is was it convincing

it really wasn't for the first of alot of chapters
naruto was conving, onepiece was convincing, after a while bleach was convincing, gantz, Mixim shamo, one outs, kaiji, takkoku hunter x hunter, Bakuman, homunculus, these are just a couple of my favorite mangas that have convinced me enough of there originality.
One of the editors in the manga Bakuman (a story about young ambitious mangaka) mentions this
"it's not whether the story was completely original or not, its how you tell it"

and in that process your goal is to convince readers of your idea both if its original and if its just plain good.

I'm still going down a rocky road with psyren but
as i read more i start to find interesting things about it.

Ive been going down a rocky road with psyren tho recently i like somethings about it.

1. the meteorite idea
2. maries breast =]
3. saving nemesis Q's programmer
(i am a breast guy )

Theres more than just powers that strings this manga to akira(the manga not the movie). For example
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Both show a ruined Japan
Both have similar drawn characters
Both have a leader with a special army of people that have powers (thats currently going on ryte now with psyren and Tetsuo and Akira had thier own little team similar to that as well.)
Finally the granny in psyren reminds me of the child in akira that could tell the future and the blind lady as well

i personally think this is a shonen version of akira(the manga version)...it's psi waves or what ever instead of drugs. In akira the manga any one could have the same sort of mental power...that was never the problem. The problem was having enough control over it so that you wouldn't die. The only major difference between these 2 manga i see is that one revolves around the govrnment(Akira) the other revolves around normal shonen ideals(psyren)

with that said....i like psyren so i don't see a poblem with the way it is...tho i find it similar to akira and most shonen at that you have to understand it's a shonen....most shonens are all going to be similar to each other because they all deal with the same things...Protagonist and badguy and fighting (for the most part) smile wink grin

interview with the creator

How was the concept of PSYREN born?
From the movie that I loved and watched various times since childhood, "Back to the Future". I viewed it again after the conclusion of my previous work (hai_Priesty's note : Mieruhito), and it was what turned me to think about Scenario (original Japanese : Hanashi)of Time-slip. From there, I planned various Gimmicks revolving around it and the story was formed.

ok i posted this topic a loooooooong time ago
my feeling toward the manga are very different now.
i like the manga psyren alot and appreciate so much from it. looking forward to an anime and video games.

Ok I like Psyren but it feels like too much of a rip off from Bleach.

I mean the characters. #1 is just like zaraki. even the eye patch!

If you think Psyren is unoriginal, try reading all those trashy shoujo manga and then tell me what you think.

The only thing that made me blink when i read Pysren straight through was the kid Kyles powers - when he first started with the Cubes i was wondering if this would end up like D-Gray Man

So much of a rip of Kekkaishi - but they got better later when he started using cones and such rather than the cubes so it was no overused, more like a nod even

Much respect for a great Manga that ended well

Back to the Future is a great movie. :3 A little cliche, to be sure, and boy does it sport 80's hairstyles like no other, but it's a fun, silly entertaining movie with a decent? plot.

Psyren is much the same. Let's leave aside the question of "all manga rip off other manga" for a moment. Yeah... it's true, I guess Ageha could use something a little more definitive to his character other than 'male protagonist'. And the sword attack was awfully representative of Byakuya.

However, I really enjoyed Psyren. I liked the characters, the humour, the concept, and the art. But most of all, the best thing about it was how it both began and ended with a definitive plot, not like a ton of manga out there. Maybe it could have been more original? I don't know. Once you spend a week or so reading shoujo one-shots one after the other, the term 'original' becomes awfully loose.

What I'm trying to say, though, is that original or not, I don't consider it a great flaw in the manga. All stories have their flaws and their strengths; well,if this was Psyren's, there are way worse things that could have gone wrong with it. That's quite likely the point some other posters were trying to make as well. We don't really care if it was original or not; lack of originality does not a bad manga make.

op, i understand what you are trying to say. the main character is just not memorable enough. i personally think psyren is enjoyable, but not engrossing. everything is a bit flat. i can't even remember any of the character's faces or powers. it's just....okay.

No onder Psyren was axed(Publishers still gave some time to properly end this manga). When I first read it,just like everyone I thought it was a ripp-off from Gantz in terms of some concepts and the antagonists reminded me the days when I used to watch X-Men and cheered for Magneto.
Copying art from popular titles is nothing new just like Fairy Tail. Author even used character design from his previous work Rave. Seeing the monsters in first 2-3 chapters of Psyren, they reminded me of hollows from Bleach.Still Psyren's defination of killing is good compared to that of Fairy Tail's. Oops! I am starting a completly new topic here. Sorry.

Originality is something we usually never find.
