So I just finished the anime and was annoyed to find that the interesting plotline from it was never resolved. Does anyone know if it is ever resolved in the novels? I am thinking of trying to get a hold of them, but if it's also dropped in them I don't know if it's worth the effort...

Yes, it is the focus of the last novel (the one which just came out). The four novels about Taiki are:

Sea of Wind - which is basically the story in the anime but in a lot more detail. This one was commercially available from Tokyopop so you can buy physical copies in English.

Demon Child (Mashou no Ko) - About Taiki in the human world. It's framed as a horror story from his teacher's POV. I rather liked this one, it's very different from the other novels. There is a fan translation of this one but I don't remember where.

Shore at Twilight - Youko is the main character, but this one tells the story of Demon Child from another perspective. Has the least about Taiki of these novels, so you could probably skip this one if you wanted.

Silver Ruins, Black Moon - It's the final novel in the series. My sister is currently reading a fan translation which is ongoing. She is rather enjoying it (Taiki is her favorite character), but I'm going wait until the translation is complete before reading. The translation is easy to find on Google and high quality.

You don't need to read the whole series if you are just interested in Tai plotline, just these four novels (though I found all of the novels enjoyable). You should be familiar enough with the overall story from the anime to understand any references to it, and the plotlines are fairly isolated to the relevant novels (with the exception of Shore at Twilght).
