This week's poll was suggested by our member Crowned_Cumber. What would you do if the person you loved the most turned out to be a criminal?

You can submit poll ideas here

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Did you watch the 2020 Summer Olympics?
I didn't watch any, but I tracked the results via news - votes: 536 (14.4%)
I barely watched any - votes: 561 (15.1%)
I watched a few events - votes: 738 (19.9%)
I watched most (or all) of it - votes: 198 (5.3%)
No, I don't care about the Olympics - votes: 1683 (45.3%)
There were 3716 total votes.
The poll ended: August 28th 2021

Now I'm curious how your engagement with the Olympics this year compared to past Olympics competitions

Difficult question, really. Approaching it another way, I'd support them through properly dealing with the consequences of their actions rather than aiding their escape.

Be punished.

I totally agree with @docdesanta , I'd always support the if I thought they were innocent .I my country it's 20 years max in jail that can be reduced by half with good conduct and there's also 2nd and 3rd degree (only sleeping in prison / having to go once in a while not to sure when it apiles) .But if it's Afghanistan where we're talking with about, a place where talking to an unmarried woman is punible and if judged to be adultery the sentence is death for the woman, that's a different thing... I'd let her escape (I find it way to harsh and don't agree with it).

There are too many variables, the answers escape / punish are too specific, even if guilty why would you be the one to punish them and what are the escaping from ?You?An angry mob?Society? If it's law whose country(civil/military/internal from an org/religious....) is that law from?

If murder I might support them if it was self-defence or an accident but the question is too unspecific. I mean unless drugged no rape or heinous crime is involuntary. 😔

Be punished

Completely agree with @Joese, I want them to face reasonable consequences for their crime, but if the punishment was deemed extreme, I would help them escape.

Be punished, zero question. I would even help to entrap or persecute them if needed.
I live in Germany. "Extreme" punishments don´t exist here. Life imprisonment is the highest it gets and there is a parole option after 15 years. You would need to be an unrepentant mass killer to serve more than 15 years in jail. Even a famous RAF terrorist didn't have to serve the original 38 years that were given out. You also need to have willingly killed someone to get life in prison.
The longest prison sentence ever in Post WW2 Germany, outside of Nazi trials, and he is the most extreme exception there is. In prison from 1962 until 2021, unless he is still being processed out:

Whatever is best for reformation and follows the victim's (could be surviving family) wishes. That's more important than whatever I want.

Trying to give harsher ratings to series on my lists.

Punished... I might help them to find a better imprisonment terms but no more than that...

I mean if I'm being honest I'd have trouble believing my wife would "commit a horrendous crime" without a good reason (for example, if she murdered someone because they murdered her whole family first, I'd support her escape).

However, the presence of the word "horrendous" in the first place makes me believe we should not be imagining such edge cases, and thus, I chose be punished.

Be punished, unless they are sentencing them to death. If so, I would help them escape.
I believe that death as a punishment serves little purpose. I would want my beloved person to do something to right their wrongs, but that's not possible if they are dead. And if they are the person I love the most, I also wouldn't want them dead. But if it's your imprisonment, punishment it is (no torture though, that's worse than death imo.)

I can think of examples where I would do either.
I'm a fair play person when it comes to self concept/integrity. But that only applies to me.
If my kid DUI's and killed a bunch of their classmates in a fiery wreck I could hand them over
(what a terrible question to pose so quickly after last week, where prison conditions were unanimously agreed upon to be inhuman)
if my spouse murdered someone they probably had a good reason for it

Well, I don't think my spouse would committed a horrendous crime (e.g., murder, rape, etc) unless she has reasonable cause. I can't even imagine my wife doing rape to someone. 🤮
For murder, maybe if the victim have done something that make her has to murder them?
..... what's etc for horrendous crime? 😅
For the poll, I choose the be punished one because hopefully the person I most cared about would not committed a horrendous crime, therefore no what if.....

If the person you most cared about committed a horrendous crime, would you prefer they escape or be punished?

Point blank, if they committed a horrendous crime, at that point, they would no longer be the person I care about most.

If I was 100% certain they did it... (for example, if I saw them do it, or they told me they did it) they would immediately become somebody I despise. All murderers and rapists are despicable, deplorable, disgusting human beings, it doesn't matter if I knew them in the past, this kind of thing is non-negotiable.

Of course, if I wasn't 100% certain, I would stick by them and perhaps feel a bit uneasy at the fact that they were being accused of such a thing, and I would even question to myself if they did it or not... however, my uncertainty would keep me around. I'm not going to make such a big decision about something based merely upon speculation.

Someone who commits a horrendous crime isn't someone I care about.
Not once they're shown their true colours, by committing such a deed.

…but for the question of whether or not I'd want them to escape or be punished, that is irrelevant:
Even for lesser crimes/sins, that wouldn't make me stop caring for them, I would still insist that they must face the consequences. Whatever the crime/sin I absolutely want people to face the consequences.
(especially if they are someone I care, or cared, for!)

…and I cannot fathom why I should possibly want anything else.

(naturally, I include myself in this. I don't have any demands of others, that I don't have of myself. On the contrary, I hold myself to a higher standard, than others)
