well...... in the core of the problem is that the publishers (and by transitivity the mangakas) arent getting any profit from what mangahelpers is doing....... so i dont see future in mangahelpers beeing a paid service, if thats the case just pay directly to the publishers and not third parties.......

To me the solution is that a % of the advertising profits of mangahelpers goes to the publishers, and the publishers send to mangahelpers the raws as soon as posible in a great quality.

Mangahelpers can inpulse its advertising profits by letting reading online manga from their site and we the consumers just have to read manga with commercials included (a tiny price for what you get) its a WIN-WIN-WIN relation ^^

At the risk of sounding like some old codger who refuses to accept change, I'm going to have to attack that last line of yours.

There's a big difference between what they can actually do and what they believe themselves to be capable of... we've basically seen this scheme before, and the online community at large inherently rebels against it. Call it pseudo-elitist values or whatever you want, but both the general audience and the scanlators generally prefer things to remain profit-free at all levels (solicitations for donations are even frowned upon these days), and actively work to circumvent anything that challenges that otherwise.

It's more than a little premature to make that sort of statement.

The authors and the companies will make money the same way they make money with their official licenses. Licensing fees, and probably a cut in the revenue capped to a certain percentage, this (ideally) works for everyone, the mangaka, MH, VIZ, and the japanese publishers.

That file is most conclusive (refer to El's post)

That's just it... they're legitimizing... at the cos of the scanlators' and the scanlation scene's interests. And apparently, this was something they had long since decided would be the ultimate goal of MH. Reference: the freetext link

So one of the people that was in charge of MH was trying to sell them out. That's fucked up...

Personally, it wouldn't affect me if they sell the site to Viz because the only times I use MH are to get the volume covers for various manga. It just seems sneaky and underhanded that someone would send an email to Viz without telling anyone beforehand. If this deal goes through, then everyone who uses the site will be shocked if Viz actually buys MH, and the only explanation that they'll get is "LOL VIZ NOW OWNS THE SITE, WE SECRETLY MADE A DEAL WITH THEM WITHOUT YOU KNOWING. ENJOY!"

This is the main reason why I don't depend on just one site for scanlations and online readers.

I think the main issue at hand is... how MH is turning scanlators' hard work into $.

This is a heavily discussed issue in the community, and everyone (well, most of them anyway) agree that it's immoral and wrong.

I checked the thing in FoOlRulez group, and this leaves me quite bitter.

http://foolrulez.org/blog/2009/09/mangahelpers-viz-sell-scanlatio n-scans-hayate-media/

This is all done by selling our free work. Unacceptable.

Those documents could easily be forged, therefore they prove nothing whatsoever.

In any case, MH doesn't own the translations. They cannot sell them, nor can they make people keep translating stuff for free. The whole plan is completely unfeasible.

Why would anyone want to forge something in such detail?
Besides, and MH upper level confirmed it was true too...

Silly idea. MH is international site. If Viz would like to sell manga through it, Viz would have to buy whole-world-covering license. Doing something like buying license for a certain country only to sell it via MH would be - simply - stupid.

It wouldn't be profitable.

It is. And if Viz buys the website, then this will more than likely get most scanlation groups to quit seeing how they know that their projects are getting sold and they don't get even a cent.

You're just assuming Viz wants to distribute the international ones, nothing in the document says anything about that. I'm guessing that they'll just drop all that, I mean, who needs 20 spanish naruto scans anyway?

this whole thing just makes me want to scanlate more, and I was contemplating about scanlating a series already released online by viz, guess I'll do it now, just to piss them off. biggrin
