Making money off scans is wrong no matter how you look at it.

So selling manga in book form is any different?

Oh please. Who spent the time to write up the story and draw it? The creator(s). They deserve the money, which they get through the publisher producing and translating their books. Making money off of someone else's work without compensation is wrong. Sure they buy the buy the books, but that's pretty much one copy being reproduced and given to many people.

I was talking about the publishers. And if viz was getting involved and money as well I'm pretty sure they'd still be paying the original creators money. And also if you're on the side of scans i remind you that scans aren't giving them any money at all. At most what they pay for one volume of manga or issue of a magazine. And then its distributed to a mass of people who don't pay a cent. I'm sure if they're going to truly legitimize or whatever they'd pay the mangaka's their fair share.

Lol, it's like MH has forgotten why scanlations are underground. ._. I doubt anyone would want to deal with the legal issues that will go around once MH actually continues with this "proposed plan."

And I find it funny how MH keeps deleting the posts in that news page that actually points this out, and basically everything wrong with this whole issue. >_>

Well, what a shocking piece of news.

So they intended to involve only those who will voluntary participate. What about those who won't, wouldn't that put them in danger of prosecution? I can see this deal as a gateway, I mean, what's stopping MH to selling those information if the plan doesn't go smoothly? Sort of reminds me of the whole Google/YT incident. laugh

I scanned through the "business proposal draft," and all I got out of that is Pay to Read. All and all, MH is just taking the opportunity to capitalized which isn't really a crime in itself, but there are other parties and instances involved.

I don't visit MH that often (on very rare occasions), so I really don't have strong opinions about this, but I think that this could affect the future of scanlations. I don't really think it will work smoothly for everybody if this follows through.

I'm probably stupid but I really don't understand.
Scanlating manga is illegal. It's a reproduction of copyrighted material, or I'm wrong? It's a tolerated phenomenon since it remains "underground" and it's probably impossible to stop it in the internet.
But If a registered company gets involved every mangaka can sue it. So why should Viz get involved into this?

There is something I missed or I misunderstood?

-_- Well, I haven't really used MH til recently to get Kekkashi raws and I can quite easily stop using it since I had other sources before (though not as organized). But I have to say, this move they are trying to pull is like tazmo and crunchyroll and I feel like it's just not going to work out. In fact, doing this is probably going to rat out the whole community (though I'm sure they are already sure it exists). I can't really see any good coming from this besides Viz getting some cash from not only their licensed manga, but other manga that they haven't even licensed. none

VIZ doesn't charge for online manga. They already have free online magazines for IKKI and Shonen Sunday. If VIZ buys Mangahelpers chances are it would remain free.

Every scanlator should have their manga removed as quick as possible from mangahelpers if that's the case.

Wouldn't it be a waste of money for viz to buy it?
I mean then they would have to have licenses for each and every one of those manga.!

Yes, I think this is one of the major issues at hand. MH is making it look simple, but if it were really this easy to get paid for working on scanlations more than one group would have done it already. But that's the thing, it isn't. It is illegal, hence why scanlations are underground.

If Viz does actually consider this so called "deal" wouldn't they just close down MH and basically report them and other groups there? O_o

I..have never used MH. O__O. So it doesn't particularly bother me. But, for those who care, I hope it doesn't become a site where you have to pay stuff.

That project is doomed to fail n backfire..Scanlators do all the work for nothing...they r wat our community is-selfless-...not seeking money or taking advantage of noobs(tazmo)...the money MH gets from ads should b enough to cover the cost of servers.so his "i am doing it for us",he can put it where i think...i just hope we isolate such stains from ur community.its sad we still have such guys no

I see this going nowhere good.
The last thing I want to see is scanlations crumbling, and I'd prefer it if english publishers stayed out it; scanlations are still, technically, illegal. What kind of a legal mess could result from this?

Having said that, Viz has always been pretty lenient about having their licensed series available on hosting sites. I wonder what will change if this all goes through...

VIZ would have to be a bunch of idiots to agree to this. MangaNovel was an attempt at doing legal scanlations, and it failed miserably. There is no way that the original Japanese publishers would ever agree to let untested, unknown internet hoards do official translations of their top series. (One problem with MangaNovel, for example, was that it only contained series no one cares about.) The idea that they'd agree to a plan like this and provide high quality scans sans tons of copy protection is absurd.

Sorry if im reposting stuff thats already been mentioned, but it was stated (possibly edited in) on MH that the scans already there wont be sold without permission, thankfully.

And yes, they are indeed planning on making the site pay to read, and on page 19 of the business plan even state that any clients (being Viz in this case) should work to restrict or even eliminate scanlators. Stupid MH indeed.
