... Or most seinen-like josei!

I've realized that my favorite shoujo/josei mangas are the ones that actually have a lot in common with shounen/seinen - they seem less stereotyped because they in fact borrow on several tropes from their so-called "opposite" genres. This makes them more interesting and unusual than the typical shoujo/josei stories.

Like a shoujo where action/adventure/fighting is emphasized as much as or more than the romance... Or the heroine is more like a shounen hero, or the main character is actually a shounen-like hero himself, etc.

My top 5 are:

Banana Fish - bloody, action-filled josei about the drug trade
Gokusen - lolarious fighting comedy!
Himitsu - intense psychological drama with seinen-like grit
Planet of the Beast King - science fiction tribal warfare!
From Eroica With Love - tense, thrilling action plots

Those are my shounen/seinen-like favorites. What about yours? eyes

Lol, I might do a "most shoujo-like shounen" thread, too... It's like manga in drag! Or cross-dressing manga. Or something. >_>;

Doc, she's not looking for any.
She's asking everyone what are their favorites.
This is fine. xD (And you say I fail~)

Anyways, I'm not sure I have a top 5...but I like these:
-Chrome Breaker
-Gokusen
-Itoshi no Nina
-Kiri seems interesting. x3
-Saver
-Tetsuichi

That was really hard to even think of titles...

Dr. Love is totally right that there are other threads! They're awesome too. eyes But I just wanted the "most favorite" of ppl's reading lists, like StarlightDreams said.

@StarlightDreams, I'm in total agreement about Kiri! Am looking forward to more scanlations. smile One thing I love about these "shounen-like" shoujo mangas is that the characterization of the female characters is in my opinion of a generally much higher standard. I mean I can relate to them more.

I like the fact that your faves list also includes so much recent manga! Now I feel tempted to re-work my own list because somehow I always forget recent mangas when I do favorite lists... Lol I must have short-term memory loss or something!

Very nice topic!

My favourites are:
Kaze Hikaru confused
Kaguya Hime (and any other Sci-fi Shojo mangas of SHIMIZU Reiko sensei)
Banana fish
Gokusen

... and Inuyasha (it is actually a Shounen but i think it is kinda "sissy" lol)

I left off Gokusen because I think it's too obviously female-oriented to be seinen-like. I also didn't count any action mangas with obvious female fanservice -- just because it's action, it doesn't make it unfeminine. This is hard... I don't think I even know five mangas that are truly shounen/seinen-like. And I'm not sure if I really like the five I listed. Erm.

Moving on to the good stuff...!
Coelacanth - Murder dramas seem rare in shoujo.
Good Father - Feels like a boy's coming-of-age story because the main characters are the boy and his girlfriend's father.
Itoshi no Nina - The male lead's point of view is convincing.
Nemuranai Machi kara - Shoujo that is like a seinen (at least nowadays it's hard to find a shoujo like this)... Just wonderful and for all ages.
Pig Bride - Somehow very Shounen Jump-like.

I am quite a reactionary then none So long as the only shounen-ish shoujo title I have happened to enjoy is Eastcoast.

Some of Kanno Aya's stuff might count. But then I'm not really sure what makes a shoujo shounen-like. :/

I agree with Odette. Being action/fighting, etc or having a male hero doesn't make something truly shounen-like. Most of those mentioned are still very female-oriented (too obvious female fanservice) and I fail to see that they are shounen or seinen-like (e.g. Juuousei, Himitsu, Count and Fairy, anyone?).

I personally think these are relatively shounen-like:
Monochrome Factor (hero is like a shounen action hero)
Tactics: only the beginning. It's been moved to a shoujo magazine and has become more and more shoujo-like.
Working Holiday: maybe? Not sure whether it will become more and more "feminine" during the serialization like most shoujo manga

Dear and anything else by this author are shounen but a bit shoujo-like?

Let's say any shoujo or josei manga is female-oriented by definition. The answer depends on what type of series each respondent believes to be shoujo-like and shounen-like. In other words, on our personal stereotypes wink People that associate demographic with anything more than the gender and the age range of the targeted audience also tend to see more shounen-like shoujo around and vice versa. The only example of shoujo manifestly similar to shounen I can think about is Sixth Star Supika. But it's way too far from being my favourite =/

I-Revo, definitely.

EDIT: Haha, wait, upon checking it again, it's Shounen with a female lead that's chasing after a boy, so I assumed Shoujo... Ahh, I suppose that's why it's Shounen-like roll

In that case, I'll add Gokusen, but I think it's already been said a couple of times.
And also Oresama Teacher.
