If asked, I won't lie.

If not asked, I won't tell.

If asked, I will consider attending a convention (depends on who asks).

I will not cosplay. I don't find it interesting in the least.

I enjoy reading manga and watching anime, but they aren't a foundation of my life, or even my free time. I treat them as I do books and movies, for in my mind, they are the same. They are but two hobbies I have amongst several dozen (arguably several hundred).

It's not really a matter of being ashamed of my interest in the Japanese culture. It just makes up such a minuscule part of myself that I don't consider it worth mentioning unless prompted.

I don't think die-hard otakus are weird, and I don't treat them any differently than I would anyone else. Who am I to judge?

Like a lot of people, I won't hide it but I wont put it out in the open. I have a few close friends who are in on the whole anime/manga thing with me. We wont talk about it around people though =P I think if one of them or I suggested a convention we might, but it's doubtful. I'd only dress up if I had someone else to do it with so I wouldn't feel as dumb hahaha.

I feel like I should be more open about it though. I'm trying to live in a way where I don't care so much about whether people agree with my hobbies or not. Even if that does sound lame.

I don't need to hide it, cause I only got as far as using anime and manga characters as my profile pictures. No cosplaying, no using any Japanese words in English sentences (Well, other than making fun of the people who take their obsessions too far), no buying any of those figurines or drama CDs or any other things. Never really got the desire to actually pay money for those things.

All I pretty much do is read manga, and watch anime. Even when I went to a convention, I went there wearing regular clothes (My friend I went to the convention with did cosplay as a very convincing black version of Zaraki Kenpachi).

I will buy a t-shirt with an anime/manga character on it if it looks cool enough though.

Same, I just watch it and read it. I've only been to one convention and even then i spent half the time in the shop to buy stuff or in the arcade. I didn't even dress up. I am fine with talking about anime and mangas with my friends since they are understanding, and they have even tried a few series themselves, although they just aren't into it. I don't buy many anime/manga related stuff though, and aside from a few complete series of manga that I bought, most of my anime/manga life is on the computer. Otherwise I'm just a normal person.

hm, yeah, there are a lot of misconceptions for us manga/anime fans and that does get annoying sometimes...
i would only dress up if the costume was feasible to wear(like, no 9-inch platform boots or giant wings, please) and if i liked it.
but other than that i dont need to hide it. people think im weird already because i walked around school with a parasol.
but yeah, i will talk to people i dont really know about anime but i dont go around using japanese endearments except to my friends who are already anime freaks but even then very rarely. i feel silly doing it cuz im not japanese and dont speak itsmile.
so i do draw a line- when it becomes orange jumpsuits.

I don't deny it. I sometimes(pretty rare nowadays) go to conventions. I absolutely loathe extreme fanboys/fangirls, imho they are the reason that most ppl feel ashamed about liking manga. e.g. ppl that do the hare hare dance while in the street. That's ridiculous. You don't see me headbanging on the street. That kind of behavior is appropriate in some situations. Headbanging, for instance, when you're listening to metal, especially on a concert. Hare hare dance is pretty much never appropriate, it just makes you look like a fool.

I also don't wear manga/anime related t-shirts. But I also don't wear heavy metal t-shirts, I don't feel the need to announce to the world the things I like. If someone is curious regarding them all they need to do is ask.

It's strange, really, but I have this sort of radar that pinpoints certain people and immediately, but politely ask them, "Do you like anime?"

95% say yes, the other 5 have no clue what the hell it is that I'm talking about.

But all in all, I don't go around telling everyone I love manga either. I hate to admit it too, but I wouldn't be caught dead in an anime-related t-shirt either. I'm already somewhat of a loner as it is, I don't want to be ostracized the second they find out my hobby. But the second I meet one of my own kind, we immediately hit it off and start talking like rabid otakus~! biggrin

You know, lately I've come to really hate the general anime fandom. I used to cosplay a little when I was between eleven and thirteen, but I'm pretty sure most stable people realize that there comes a point when a person is too old to play make-believe with dolls and fancy dress. The last time I went to a convention was two years ago, and it was so depressing.

There are people who like anime, and then there are anime fans. You can usually tell them apart by scent.

+1. Personally I like manga, just like I like comics wherever they come from: Japan, USA, France, Belgium, Spain, Canada, Switzerland, UK, Korea, Italy... there are fantastic storytellers and artists everywhere. I think "Otaku" is a very respectable lifestyle, but otherwise I have nothing to do with it.

...but I don't wear it.
1. I'm not into this stuff.
2. Even if I was into dressing up, anime & manga are not popular in my country so there'd be no chance for me to display myself. I heard there was once a convention in the capital though.

I don't hide the fact that I read manga since there's no need to do it. Never heard of anyone being picked on because he/she was reading manga, but then again it isn't that popular. But all the people I've encountered thus far who found out I read manga had no negative reactions. I actually found out that another 3 collegues of mine read manga & watched anime while I was saying that I like reading manga so it was a good thing I said it.

Kind of offtopic:
There was a time when I almost burst out laughing when I shouldn't: I was at a friend's house and her father asks me "So what do you do in your spare time?" (or something like that) and I told him that I read manga + other stuff. And then he says "Oh so you read hentai.". He kind of gave away his secret hobby. I don't know how else he could've known about hentai. Oh well.

Well, I love anime and manga but I only go as far as keeping collection of them and spending massive time watching and reading them. Before I used to buy items related to them, like posters, keychains, stickers, but now I invest it more to the series and books. I'm not much interested in going, unless forced/convinced, to conventions (since I don't even know where it is and what's there to see) and moreso on cosplays.

People who don't know me much wouldn't expect to be a fan though I don't hide/deny it. I just usually open up only to those who are also interested in anime and/or manga.

Some of the zest shown towards anime/manga here on this thread is admirable. I've always thought I'm a big fan of manga/anime but compared to you guys, I probably just dabble.

I read most of my manga online, and watch all the occasional anime online as well.

The only manga and anime related items that I own are the random manga volumes and a few anime DVDs. I've never been to an anime convention, somehow I never felt the need to. But if one crops up near where I live, I think I'd like to attend.

Oh, but I do have a this huge want to learn Japanese one day so that I can read manga raw.

I read manga, watch anime and listen to Japanese music sometimes. I don't go to conventions and all that, mainly because I don't have a clue where they are. I also wish to be able to read and speak Japanese so I can possibly start my own little group, but I highly doubt that will happen. I have already gotten to the point where I can notice mistakes that a group has made in their subs.

I love anime and manga but...I draw the line at cosplay and actually "liking" them (in a romantic sense). It's enough to have them as profile pictures but I don't want to BE the characters or BE WITH them no .

No offense, Otaku biggrin .

Well, I just enjoy them as I enjoy movies and books. I'd love to have T-shirts or whatever it is connected with series I like.
The only reasons I wouldn't do cosplay are because I'm too lazy and I don't really have face/body shape suitable for it.
