My friend is looking for a manga that "hits him deep and makes him want to know more" but it also has to be a romance and end tragically. Any suggestions?

Here are tragic romances

Boku no Hatsukoi wo Kimi ni Sasagu
ES
Angel Sanctuary
Houkago Hokenshitsu - Well this is open to interpretation with regards to how tragic it is
Koi no Kawaki - One of the few yaoi I enjoy purely because it's story is so touching but if guy on guy is a huge no-no I would skip this one.

and here are some hard-hitting non-romantic manga that have amazing plot lines and a tragic ending.

Banana Fish
Sanctuary
Let Dai

That's all I can think of, Hope this helps.

Shoujo:
Kon no Ki Konoha !!
Mucha Kucha Daisuki !!
Romeo x Juliet
Zettai Kareshi (still has a somewhat happy ending after the tragedy).

Second Koi no Kawaki even though it's BL.

it's would be easier if you give us more information such as which is his favorite genres? Does he prefer real life tragedy or fighting manga w/ tragedy ending. Anyway, there are some of the kinds

Bradherley no Basha, very gruesome, depressing and dark

Chrno Crusade, Shin Angyo Onshi top rated fighting shounen, seinen w/ a tragic ending

Taiyou no Uta Quick tearjerker josei drama

Basilisk classic seinen w/ a lot of blood and gore.

Saishuu Heiki Kanojo, Elfen Lied, Variante the heroine have a very unfortunately past and somewhat ends up as a sci-fi weapon, then have a no escape romance relationship...

ES psychology and tragedy
