I don't see why not. But he's done a good job, so I guess that he deserves it.

The vast vast vast majority of manga artists actually take day jobs or live with their parents. Looking at that list and concluding that manga pays is like going to an international art auction and thinking that everyone that paints can sell a day's work for 50 grand. All of those people are the top of the top, and they were at the right place at the right time, with the right 'talent' (it's quoted since most of those people don't particularly have anything special about their works, aside from being inexplicably wildly popular).

i know your probably just kidding, but i thought i point out; not necessarily. it ain't easy drawing manga unless a) your artwork/style is very easy to do b) you're expected to hand in a small number of pages a month (an estimated maximum of 20 ).of course this is taking into account that you've already got the story/plot perfectly planned out. about the only other exception is that they'd be an EXTREMELY skilled artist. think kishibe rohan from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

if they don't belong in the above categories, it's a gruesome task, especially for those involved in weekly mangas. a single page can take more than half of the day to finish, and they have to hand in the chapter in less than a week. as a result, sometimes, they work long hours, even working non stop for more than a day, sleep less than 8 hours, and eat less than 3 meals a day (at worst, none at all), all to conserve and use as much time on finishing a chapter. it ain't a surprise if you hear a mangaka in terrible health from time to time.

about the only time they do have it really easy is when their manga is super famous that the merchandise for it is still being produced and sold, even after the end of its serialization or the mangaka haven't done nothing at all for ages. a good example would be akira toriyama. the guy hasn't done anything serious for years, and he's still raking in the cash with royalties from every dragonball merchandise made and sold.

Maybe, but his schedule drawing both Dr. Slump and Dragonball was pretty hellish. Reports have it that he once pulled 6 all-nighters in a row for Slump, and he recalls drawing till he falls asleep and waking up to find himself still drawing. That's a hard-earned 11,000,000 euros right there, and when you consider that a lot of other mangaka work just as hard and don't make even a quarter as much, you'll realize it's not as glamorous a job as it's made out to be.
