This is something that's very tricky to answer (For me at least). On one hand, you're right about it preventing neglect and future abuse of children, cause there are tons of cases where things like that have happened. But on the other hand, there are exceptions where drug addicts are actually good parents and even stop using drugs in order to make sure that they take good care of their children.

To tell you the truth I'm undecided about this, cause this isn't one of those situations where you can go "Just let it run and see what happens", cause the chance of it being the wrong thing to do or the right thing to do is equal...

Err, why the hell would drug addicts be sterilized? I heard about doing this to rapists, and it makes some sense, although I'm against it, too. But drug addicts? I know a few of them who managed to get out of the addiction and now are married and have children like other people.
Deciding who should have children and who should not - sounds like a totalitarian system to me.
Shouldn't we think of ways of helping drug addicts instead of sterilizing them?

I'd agree with you, except they aren't being forced. They're being rewarded if they go along with it and being left alone otherwise.

This probably saves the government money in the long run...they won't end up having to pay for the costs of neglected children.

There are cases where drug addicts actually get their shit together as to not get their kid as fucked as themselves.
Besides, there is plenty of abuse and neglect in "normal" families too.
Sometimes I feel people should have to take a parenting test before being allowed to procreate.

Making decisions for yourself is an important aspect of your life, If you can't do something as simple as that then perhaps you don't deserve a kid?

I gotta agree. Seeing how the drug addicts have a choice to do this or not, then they should continue with doing these kind of services.

But wouldn't paying them for doing this kinda fuck up their lives even more, seeing how you're giving them money that they could use to go out and buy more drugs? Granted, some might be trying to turn their life around, but that's not gonna be the case for every addict that agrees to do this...

My answer is no, we shouldn't. Well, at least I wouldn't pay for drug abusers to be sterilised, for many reasons. It's the same principle as me, paying a criminal not to commit crimes. Philosophically they were capable of rectifing this problem on their own; again, some could argue, paying for the sake of the better of two evils would be a just cause, but I think NOT, in this matter.
