Not really. Pop stars of today say the exact same thing of the pop stars of 10,20 years ago. The problem is those that consider older music better, the purists, and the people who believe music is better, the modernists. The purists were the modernists of 20 years and the modernists of today will be the purists in 20 years. Music really doesn't change much, rather, what changes are people's tastes. I know people who listen to Iron Maiden that can't stand Disturbed even though the differences between the two bands aren't musical so much as lyrical. The point is, certain artists and genres will always have it's followers no matter how many hate it.

I'd say I couldn't disagree more with the above statement but.....the way the question is worded I just can't. There are three major things that are disappearing (they are by no means gone completely): good and/or meaningful lyrics, the actual singing ability of the idols-I mean even the Beatles lip synced music videos, but nowadays even whole shows/concerts are lip synced, and soul.
That last ones hard to quantify and the closest thing I can come up with is "emotion"...kinda like nakama in Japanese is more than just comrade or friend...

Music itself is just changing, but yes there are certain parts of it that are being forgotten and are degrading...I can hardly find any soul music that is worth listening to after the year 2000, though rock is a little easier to find.

nope dont think so the quality of music hasnt degraded just that what appeals to the masses asks for mediocre music, you just got to make a effort to find musicians that still produce quality music theres alot of them out there

Of course it has. However, I cannot blame the artist. Many very talented musicians have to play terrible music in order to gain acceptance from the masses. A guy used to have to learn 32nd note runs at 180 up and down the fingerboard in order to attract girls. Now you just need two or three chords!

I will say that I fit more into the Rock and Pop classes, but I will listen to most anything. So, in that light, I will ask a couple of questions to prove my point.

Can you name one guitar god (Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Slash, etc) who has come out in the last decade?

Can you name a new drummer who can compete with Vinnie Colaiuta or Terry Bozzio?

Exactly. You can't.

On a side note, I'm hoping that this 80's craze might bring about a second coming of the hair band...and we all know that no hair band was complete without a face melting guitarist.

i dont think that music has degraded all together, i think the lyrics are what screw up most songs.

look up Rebecca - Legend of Rebecca - 03 - Tattoo Girl if you can find it. that song wouldn't be half as awesome as it sounds if i knew the lyrics.

main stream music, almost all of it, has a generic sound to it, and if it doesn't have generic sound, its the lyrics that are played out.

i was born in 1987, and i think that music from the 90's is mostly stupid, haven't heard anything in the 00's that makes me think i will continue to listen to it 20 years from now, but if i look at the 80's 70's 60's 50's and even earlier, its not hard for me to pick up almost anything and like it.

i have to sift through so much shit now to even find something that i can stand, much less listen to.

its part of the reason im going through non english music so much, i can find something i like the music for easier than a music and lyric combo.

your friend is an idiot
there has always been good music, the ignorance to claim what you heard so far on "music" in general is post-stupidity. What furthers is basing it on "main steam"
we all know its bland and simple, but that's what people always see so its more easier to accept and go along with those generic sounds.

Just search you find really good song - old school to new school
eek

I really don't know how much bad music is there today compared to the past. But there was always generic sounding music on the charts, I believe. You should tell your friend that if he looks in the right places, he could always find good music, no matter what generation it is.

Do you yourself think popular music in the past was even better and more meaningful than today's? Have you heard much cheesy pop songs from the '90s/'80s/'70s?

This.

No, it changed.
What your friend said just doesn't make sense. If we were talking about the same style of music then ok, you can say X is better than Y. But we aren't, you can't say a pop rock song is worse than a hard rock song, they are different, you can only say:
"I like hard rock better than pop rock."

I for example like muse, the killers and foo fighters better than any music from 70' 80' but no, I can't say they are better.

I think many of you have completely missed the point. It depends on where you look.

The US for example, is mostly known today for its Hip Hop, Rap and Pop. These 3 genres are dominating the mainstream market. Rock and Alternative have taken a "back seat" because of this. But, I still manage to find music today that is new, lyrical, and above all, I like it. Heck, just found an artist several days ago calling themselves Saosin. They play Post-hardcore and Alternative Rock, but I think they have good stuff.

It's not even music the crap they have these days. There's not many song now days you'd consider it to be timeless classics that you'd never get sick of. The songs these days are hardly meaningful and the artists don't really have talent either.

No, there always had bad music, it's just that now the mass like that music...
But if you search, there is still a lot of great music around that just wait to be discovered. It's just that the "good" music is not anymore at the front of the market.

I don't want to say that music is not good anymore, it will make me look like all the old people that I hate so much and can't stand new thing.

This is what you get for only listening to the radio, where they play the songs of the highest bidders, or only looking at music that's being pushed by the richest players on the field. If all you're exposed to is the mass produced corporate products, of course you're going to think everything is crap.

I think it has, technically. But almost all the music I like is modern.

If you go back and look at charting songs from the 70s for example (the ones remembered too, but especially the ones forgotten) we had the same kind of crap we have now. However, a larger number of people could actually sing, by percentage. The problem with music today isn't that the masses like crap. It's that there are too many new artists. Before the internet and large-budgeted music producers, you were not able to make a career on covering songs and sub-par singing, most had to be capable of writing passable songs for themselves.
Most of my favourite artists wouldn't exist without the music boom, but they are still surrounded by a sea of singers who shouldn't have went further than the karaoke bar.
