The only dojo i loved was my Kung-fu dojo in Montréal. Then, i moved elsewhere and there was only Karate available. I did Karate for a few years then decided to give up, i had an interest to continue martial arts but i didn't like this dojo's karate.

Since then, i've bought a sand bag (punching bag) and i practice my kicks and punches daily. Before, i could barely touch the bag and my wrist would give up. Now i can put the full weight of my body and not feel a thing.

I also like to read fighting mangas and steal training and combat techniques from them. Tough / Grappler Baki.

personally ive never been into weapon fighting much as i find it impractical - however if you are going to do it at least choose weapons that will be readily convertable into reeal world objects that you might find lying around in the street in the event that your are attacked... people that choose to learn weapons that they will never have the need or opportunity to use really confuse me.

*sighs* i just wish it was legal to walk around with arm braces... that would be enough of a weapon for me, some nice metal or carbon sleeves for my forearms and back of the hand... maybe matching ones for my shins too

bah.

on the plus side i found out there is a dojo within about 1.5km from my house (at a local school), dunno what they teach yet though... ill drop by sometime

edit: personally i prefer something like Hajime no Ippo

In first grade i was enrolled in Chuck Norris Karate School in Van Nuys. I went for one year and was a Green Belt..

haha I actually went to a chuck norris school too, is that in the US? my school was part of chain, champion karate center's (a little lame but what isn't?)

@yoshin- if your looking for training real world weapons, Bo's and escrima sticks would be along that alley. Seriously how hard would it be to find a stick randomly?

Yoshin,

For a weapon, since I learned short stick forms and escrima sticks, I like to keep an axe handle (sans axe blade) in the car, if I get pulled ver, I can say it's part of a tool I just bought at the hardware store, but if I ever need it, I will have it available for an emergency. I would say this is a practical weapon. Plus I can use it to break windows or pry open door if 'm ever in an accident and a person is trapped in the car.

ya. i personnally prefer something a little shorter like a jo (weird given my size) or a pair of escrima

on a side note i saw a guy the other day in a demonstration pick up a thin metal pipe (ie the thickness of thte metal used in the pipe rather than the pipe circumference itself) and fold it between his thumb and forefinger - squashing the pipe so it was almost like a blade.... freaky... and no it didnt seem to be fake - i looked at the pipe itself and the guys hands were like covered in musclees and veins... scary...

lol now for THAT guy training with a sword is almost practical since he can turn pipes into swords x.x

I didn't know a lot of people uses Eskrima here too. We had to do it in PE during highschool dead I'm not really a martial arts enthusiast so it was pretty boring for me.

I did a tiny bit of Tae Kwon Do when I was really young, but my cousin kicked my two front teeth off while we were sparing... never liked it after that.

O.o

wow that beats me...

one of my sisters smacked open my eye with a baseball bat when we were playing and one of my brothers had his nose sliced (shallow) with a katana by one of my other brothers when they were training... but never anything like permanent or anything x.x

hahahahah..
martial arts... for fun... and to gain physical strength..

but does it teach you how to fight? hmm.. maybe if you practice it for.. 20 years.. okay.. keeps you in shape.. all that nice stuff..

but hmm..
i remember i watched a movie.. korean movie about fighting
a fighting tournament was happening and stuff like that..

and on the van to get to the tournament area--- a gangsta was running away from the cops so he hopped on to the van.

the gangsta ends up beating pretty much everybody except the last guy (the last guy was the main character, so to speak)

and after the fight with the main character he reveals the truth behind why he was in the tournament.

and then he says something along these lines:

"All you martial art dip s**ts in the end resort to the same dirty methods of fighting as me. The only difference between you and me, is that I'm paid to hit people while you're paid to teach people how to fight."

damn. i laughed at that. pretty hard.

cause it's true. there is no "ultimate art" nothing's gonna give you the superior edge. unless you got a knife.. lol.. or gun... pop a cap on some .... guy's butt..

its more like the physical benefits of taking up a martial art makes it worthwhile-- then giving you actual techniques.

since in the end- there are no rules to fighting.

are there? i think the most realistic fighting manga/anime i've EVER read/seen.. is kyou kara ore wa. thats funny. and true. the damn kid fills his suitcase with lead bars and uses it as a blunt weapon... lol... he sure knows the rules of fighting-- that there are none.
cause unless... you wanna study techniques for the rest of your life... and become some crazy pro old guy... which yes, some exist today i guess... well.. go ahead.

but most people on this forum are probably 10-20 something anyway.. not nearly the amount of experience to get to some sort of "master" level.

totally unrelated to this topic but i still like to say this kinda stuff... cause it's true.

but, probably the reason why many of us cant fight with no rules is because...
if fight with no rules, the person I am fighting goes at me with no rules.

so I have to accept the fact that i will possibly lose an eye and break get a few broken fingers. possible a ripped off ear.

and of course, the foe would suffer nothing less either, right? unless he just has so much muscle mass im no challenge. people with muscle mass >>>>>>>> people without muscle mass. dont pick a fight with some big kid just cause you think you can win. especially if you're skinny... lol.. you have like.. 0 muscle mass compared to him. he'll own you physical strength wise... I'd just run away or kick him in the weener and then run away.

lol just found this thread.
I just started this summer Okinawan Karate. First Style. And I really enjoy doing it, I'm still quite bad at it, but I'm really enjoying training in this style still 10th kyu tho T_T. rofl but i love training a lot, and i plan to stick with this for a while.
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taika_Seiyu_Oyata) <-Style/Grandmaster wiki if anyone's interested biggrin )

EDIT:
Oh, and interestingly enough, my best character in the Tekken series is Hwoarang. Some of the moves he uses are real techniques that I used to be able to do.

He's your favorite because hes good as hell, bigrazz and if you can do his moves you were crazy good also laugh (my favorite in tekken aside from Hwoarang is probably either Martial Law, or Feng Wei. Feng Wei is sweet, reminds me of Shenmue for some reason every time i play him.)

Oh and vinceasuma, you have quite a track record, I'm thoroughly impressed. biggrin

I studied Tae Kwon Do for about a year, after that, it was just repetitive, I got to a green belt, plus the program sucked. I do plan on getting a black belt in something (Chinese preferably, I like my heritage) eventually. I was better than all of the little kids in the class, but school and music stuff got too busy.

Around the age of 11 or 12, I studied a bit of Tae Kwon Do. It lasted about 9 months or so, including all those days I didn't actually feel like going for one reason or another. I think I only got to a yellow belt, although if I hadn't left I was going to be tested for a green belt soon. I just lost interest, even though I was progressing pretty rapidly. I do have an interest in taking some other form of martial arts though, probably something Chinese because my dad would bug me about it otherwise. Although it's probably just going to be one of those things I don't actually get done.

bah to first sentence. BAH i say

personnally when i am up against a larger person than myself (ESPECIALLY bulkwise) then i go for the joints - knees ankles, hips, shoulders etc...

for a big person those are usually the weakest points on their body - it is merely made worse by bulky muscles because they weigh more and therefore the joints are under greater strain.

it only takes 8lb of pressure in the right spot to break a human knee cap. it doesnt matter how strong you are.

kicking someone in the groin... well thats just a REALLY bad idea... against some people sure they are down... others... you just make em mad.

either go for the joints or the eyes or something. then run away (personally i cant run particularly fast so that isnt really an option for me)

Kickboxing, karate, judo, kendo, taekwondo, and muay thai. I started picking those up as a kid.. a lot of it had to do with being the only girl in my family.. so, I was a major tomboy.. and I've been doing them ever since.
