I don't know about Japanese but in Thai we use English words because some English words have no direct translation to the Thai counterpart and vice-versa, I wouldn't be surprise that you find English in Japanese sentences because there is always translation issues.

I think the main issue here is that there is a stereotype now. Yes, I feel insecure, and yes, I care what other people think of me, maybe a little too much. I mean, wouldn't other people just remember Sailor Moon and Pokemon and leave it at that, and just label you as some weird 18 year old who plays with toys from 3rd grade? <---(my ever-anxious thoughts).

I'm not saying that there's anything really wrong about using Japanese in your English speech, but what this topic was made for referred not to the actual Japanese language, but to people who may add 'nyan' to the end of their sentences... Which doesn't make sense in English...



True. That is true for using it as an effort to use the language, or to use a word that has no translation... but the issue is about when people use it to be part of the fan culture, I feel like .... well, bad... (I was very easy to tease as a kid...)

However, ask this. Are these words an average Japanese student/worker/etc(whatever you are) use these words in daily conversation? Chaos;Head is a perfect example of ... you know... I;m falling asleep, so I'll leave it at this... I'll edit this more in the morning......

(If you are one of those people who don't care what other people think, you talk the way you want, and just don't worry about it. There will be people that don't care, and people who avoid you, but just feel proud that you are strong enough not to let it bother you.)

the main issue is the stereotypes. There are otakus, and then there are people who like to read. I LOVE to read. Manga is a wonderfully new experience that gives life to the story while still leaving things up to the reader's imagination. I DON'T buy figurines.... I gave up on any new collectible things after Elementary School because I could never tell how long I would remain interested. Also, because my neighbors told me I was obsessed with them... That was so traumatizing... I'm so easily traumatized...

I confess I avoid people who are extreme fans. I'm afraid I do not believe I could be truly comfortable around a person that finds it easy to do things I find embarrassing and uncomfortable... Well, it's easier in college, there are more accepting people here, but at high school, I was really afraid that the kid who made fun of me in elementary school would find some new topic to harass me on.

Kitteh should not have been rebuked for her feelings. Just because YOU(<--not really refering to anyone in particular) don't care what people think, realize that other people might be stressed by that. Here's an example of how I would think every time my the underclassmen in my high school japanese class called me Senpai as they passed me in the halls:

-'They must think I'm weird...{;ToT;}

There are many types of people who read manga. I like Jiraishin, Banana Fish, Akumetsu, Inugami, Homunculus... Not typical fan-creating manga series. I started Death Note because it was interesting and finished it for the philosophical lesson. I also like Gintama, for its hilarity.

I'd never do that.

I mix -a lot- of english into my native tongue, but that's ok - most people are fluent here. It's more comfortable that way, just like "utilizing" more complicated words from time to time. Having a rich vocabulary at my disposal makes me awesome and cool by default, it's not something I try to be.

.....d-does it count if I roleplay? If yes, then I definitely do. I feel as though the meaning isn't as true to character as the character says it if it was all in english.

For example, I used to RP in the NARUTO fandom a little while back. Obviously, we wouldn't go "MASS SHADOW CLONE JUTSU" because that's just...not good. The dubbed anime did that. "Tajuu Kage Bunshin no Jutsu" is what I'd use. Of course, there are several exceptions. If you take into account Superbi Squalo from Katekyo Hitman Reborn, who calls Yamamoto "KATANA BRAAAAAAAT", obviously, it shows a little something about how they see each other as, right?

I guess it all depends on what it looks like and what the people I'm interacting with. In any case, when I'm talking with them outside of RP and into just chatting, we usually use Japanese words when we have no choice or the alternative just takes too long to type. For example, "so-and-so is such a tsundere" or "don't deny it, you're totally moe" instead of "she's just hiding her love by being explicitly angry and acting like she hates him all the time" and "you're so adorable in a way that I need to use a Japanese word to describe this phenomenon". That sort of stuff. :>

I only do that in online, never in real life. ^^;

I say things like: Gome, kawaii, mate. XDD

i would only mix languages if i can claim to speak it or speak it...

I've heard people who cannot speak english mix it their language 80% of the time its very wrong.
it helps but i think unless im told by someone who actualy speaks the language that it sounds right im not gunna mix and match it up according to my own perception of the language.

its good for people to take it like an otaku language but its not an otaku language...its japanese
its not like in star trek were you can learn that elf language and have it as its own nerd language u know...but i guess people are free to interprate things how they see, i just see it as something more official and dont like to come across silly.

(I speak 2 languages by default btw) If you don't understand that then here is an example:
Friend who doesn't speak english come's to england however he had watched alot of english shows!
He intepreted them and fair enough he got some words right, but i had to stop him because for the bulk of it...it all sounded spazticated, not in a harsh way but a realistic way.
He was also singing out a song at some point and that was all wrong> he soon learnt that he needs to not only learn or understand but be told if he is using it right!

Still the same. I don't mind as much, but when people continue to use it....uggh. There are certain words that make me cringe when I hear people using them irl, and I've noticed that these are honorifics - familiarity ones included - (i.e., sempai, -chan, -kun, -san, etc...). The Korean counterparts as well. If I hear someone that isn't Korean using "oppa!" or "unnie!" again, I may strangle them.

Rarely is it not stupid. D: So, yeah, refrain from it. I don't mind it though. T____T This makes me seem like I rage each time someone does that. No, I dislike that some people do that, but I don't mind it, if that makes sense. If they want to talk like that, it's their business, meh.

I more often use different Hello, goodbye, and sorry. Thats it, I dont mix into sentences or anyhting. And its not just Japanese. I use Arabic, Latin, Spanish, Swahili, and German greetings XD

I would only do this if it was to talk about specific thing which was originally Japanese that English doesn't quite have a word for. Ex "I'd really like to go to Tokyo during April so I can do hanami... But I don't get my vacation time until June!" I suppose saying it out as 'enjoying the beautiful blooming period of cherry blossoms' would also work, but it's a specific cultural 'event' and I think it's more politically correct to use the Japanese term.

I get really irritated when people randomly come out with Japanese words completely out of nowhere. "Look at that totally sugoi purple car over there!" "That pencil case is sooooo kawaii!" etc, and when people call eachother -chan, -kun, -san, etc. There can be some argument that this would be OK in a Japanese class, (My teacher always insists that we call her Sensei, never professor), but even then, I think it's usually just awkward and dorky.

I really don't like it. D: That "Ohemmgeee~! Sugoi Kawaii mahou shoujo~~~!" stuff drives me nuts.

However, only when with my mum, I have a habit of saying "iku/ikuru" under my breath when I'm rushing her.

I think one of the options in the poll should be something like "No, I don't really pay attention to those things" - I mean, I don't use Japanese words in English sentences, not because I think it's dorky but because I don't really pay attention to it that much, or it's not something I really considered. If someone does, I don't think they're a geek or something. It doesn't really make a difference to me :/

I find it dorky, annoying, and overall useless. If one is actually practicing Japanese, then I think it's fine. But just using slang and describing words is stupid. "OMG that dress is kawaii!" "zomfg ur furry drawing is kawaii" NO. I believe that only if there isn't a commonly used English translation for it than it is appropriate. Using Sakura instead of cherry blossoms is ok because that's just what the trees are called. There are Sakura Matsuris. Saying desu at the end of sentances does not mean anything. It's like adding an extra nonsense verb to a sentance. "I was walking down the street, desu~!" WTF, doesn't make sense. It is true that the Japanese mix English into their language, but often it is borrowed words and/or they are practicing it.

I'll admit I mix Japanese words in with friends only in the spirit of making fun of people who do it seriously. I take Japanese and have studied and lived there. When I practice Japanese, I mix the languages, but a large portion of my sentances are in Japanese, not just one word.
I use English to get across what I'm trying to say that I haven't learned in Japanese yet. You can mix them, just don't be stupid. But where to draw the line...
