I've played a few. I don't like it if its a romance one and all or most of the love interests already like the main character. That's so boring. I like when you have to work for it and struggle. I like a challenge. Without it these sorts of games can get pretty boring. I was disappointed in one I tried recently because it took me a lot of trial and error to get the patch to work and when I finally played it I realized all the guys already like the girl. It just really bores me. The harder to get the better. I havent played a lot but I know what I like.

I play otome and BL games. I've done some dating sims as well. Most recently I've been working my way through Akaya Akashiya Ayakashino.

I imagine the "why not" to this question falls under two things: lack of interest or language barrier.

There's a whole lot of romantic visual novels (not dating sims). Ever heard of Key's visual novels (they seem to be popular internationally): Little Busters!, Planetarian, Air?

Do 999: 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors and the Ace Attorney series count? If so, then yes. I loved both to death, but I think I prefer reading an actual novel over playing visual novels in general (I just really enjoyed them because they were made outstandingly). The problem with visual novels is that, as in the case with 999, they tend to describe stuff in words that you're already seeing on the screen. It's not a huge issue, but I think Ace Attorney did better in leaving more space for imagination through dialogue. 999 is closer to an actual novel than Ace Attorney.

One of the problems I have with text-heavy games is that developers don't make the text speed fast enough. Quite a bit of dialogue repeats, too, so it's a huge issue for me. I read quickly, as I play RPGs and visual novels, and read books and articles as well.

Another issue was that I found the vocabulary in visual novels to be kind of limited. I'm not sure if this is a translation issue or whether the original script was written simply, but I'm usually disappointed in the level of writing that visual novels give.

Despite all that, though, I'm quite fond of them from what little visual novels I've played.

Well, I played Fate/Stay Night (All routes), Tsukihime (All routes), Saya no Uta, Clannad (All routes) and Lightning warrior raidy 1&2.

Except for the last two, They were interesting visual novels, but for my taste, they take up way to much time (I'm way faster at reading books, which I usually do)

I've recently got into playing them and I'm playing several at the moment but haven't completed one with a good ending yet. The only one I've finished I somehow ended up with the worst ending... cry

I have played them before. However due to my country's draconian laws and smaller market the choice of games is VERY SMALL! :-(

Only once. It was a yaoi visual novel. laugh It was more funny than actually thinking it was hot.

I finished Saya no Uta a few hours ago. I didn't even consider playing visual novels (funny story: I was looking for some horror/mystery anime and someone recommended SnU as a great horror/mystery VN, so I thought: "Why not?") but this one was great.

While it doesn't feel like a video game (emphasis on feel), I found it quite enjoyable so I'm going to pick up some VNs (bad thing is that some of them have a ridiculous price, 150$ for Cross Channel on eBay eek ). I don't really mind the H scenes if they don't distract from the story which was the case with SnU.
