I'm sure many of you have noticed the art. While at first it was a bit wonky, the artist fixed it and i ended up really liking the art. Now, all the characters look really chubby and its starting to put me off...anyone got any idea why? Or is it only me?

I posted this in another thread, but I HATE the new art. It doesn't give me any sense of three-dimensional space. Instead, it looks like those lace-cutout things that Victorian ladies used to make - flourishes and curlicues and all surface with no depth. I can't tell what's happening half the time, and I can't tell the characters apart anymore. Whenever Alan fights someone, I have to look for his scars to figure out which one he is. The story is complicated enough right now without making it impossible to tell what is happening in a fight and who is on screen!

And every single, last one of the characters looks like a girl. Or a doll. Hell, they all look like porcelain baby dolls with big, long eyelashes and the exact same hair.

Argh! Hate the new art! If I wanted to look at pretty, pretty, abstract scrollwork, I would go look at my Great Aunt Martha's dining room wallpaper.

I agree with the previous poster, to an extent /I wouldn't go so far as to use the word 'hate', though/. While I understand why the art changed, I still can't help but be dissapointed by how it looks now. Even leaving the 'messiness' aside - I'm awfully annoyed at how all the characters look almost exactly the same and I, just like serobins above me, have to look hard to actually be able to make out some of the characters /like the Noahs - I was looking at Tykki for like 3 pages, without being able to know if it's actually him! it's frustrating/
Overall, while the art is not bad, per se, it's generic, and it's something I'd expect from some random shoujo, but not from DGM. And that may be a silly reason to be put off by the whole manga, but I am. The art just bugs me, and despite finally getting to certain points plot-wise, I can't find it in myself to be glad about that fact.
Just my two cents.

You are like the dense main character in a shoujo manga.

I HATE the new art. It made my stop buying the d grayman books after the ninth one. I'm sure it's NOT the mangaka's fault, but it makes me sick. Worse part is she changes it again (again, not her fault) and I... I HATE it.

I haven't read up to the change...but I liked what I guess is the old style. Besides the fact that the hands are waaaay too big. Not strangely, but noticeably big. As big as the heads big. But it's still good. I'll have to check up on the new change then

"'The lives I've taken will be paid for with my own life.' That's one way to look at it...but it doesn't mean they come back once you die. Lives can also be paid for by the sword; by redeeming yet other lives. That is why 'Hitokiri Battousai' is still alive in the Meiji Era."

I actually like her current style and while she made a huge change in her art evolution, I don't see how it's a bad thing. She's been in hiatus for quite awhile, the consistency in her style will change because of that unlike most shounen mangakas, and has had time to expand her horizons and improve herself and this is what it came to. I mean, she really did improve by miles - check her instagram.

Also, I'm an avid reader of shoujo and I don't really see her current style resembling shoujo that much aside from the characters looking prettier and softer in features? Kanda looks like a god (he looks so much more masculine now and so gorgeous<3) and Allen looks really cute and soft (<33) and Lenalee looks adorable, so. I mean, if you read shoujo, art can be cute - characters will look nearly the same, especially the girls (DGM, even with her new style, you can still tell characters apart), and most of the details will be screentone. I mean, idk if i had to say, Hoshino-sensei's art is like ... Shoujo-esque 5.0.

Even then, what's wrong with shounen having pretty characters?

Anyways, keep in mind that Hoshino-sensei worked hard and is even willing to continue the series from her hiatus. If you don't like the style then at least stay for the plot and support her because that's what she really needs, not people whining about why she can't go back to her previous style. Isn't that just insulting towards the artist? lol

I mean, before her artstyle resembled the creator of Death Note because she used to be his assistant so his style influenced her a lot, but over the years - now it's her own art style that she's using, so I'm not sure why people are acting like it's the end of the series or whatever or that she's jeopardizing it with her art?

I honestly preferred the art from the very beginning, when it was much more realistic and detailed. I know that was a long time ago and she shifted towards a more stylistic look around the time of the fight in the Asia Branch HQ, but I'm still sad lol. I felt that the original dark, detailed tone suited the manga better. I suppose now there's more lighthearted gags and whatnot, but it really made me feel like we were in the dark, gritty Victorian era before and that was more engaging to me than this sort of overly shiny, slick style. Everyone seems more normally proportioned before as well.

And in response to the previous poster, I've a read of shoujo too, and something that shoujo routinely suffers from is "same-face syndrome." You can typically only tell people apart using their hairstyles and haircolor. Everyone has to look pretty, and "pretty" looks a certain way, so that leaves less variation and less realism.

I also agree there was something strange about the hands. Very weirdly large, particularly Allen's Innocence hand, imo. Are they... yaoi hands?

On a random side note, I will also say I'm not a fan of guys with long hair. As soon as that chapter where Allen got hit with the hair-growing potion came out, I knew he was gonna end up with long hair and was disappointed. Hoshino, why must you be one of those mangakas that love dudes with long hair... So many dudes are have long hair in the series now, when there were so blessedly few in the beginning...

Though of course, I'll still support the series and I'm glad it's back. I like it for the characters and the story, as confusing as it is right now, lol. I got over my gripes with the art ages ago since she shifted away from my perferred style a long time ago, haha.
