Actually I think part of the reason there isn't so much physical contact between friends in the US is homophobia.
Aaaand to get back on topic, my oddest roommate was a guy who moved in after the girl I had been living with moved into a sorority. He'd cook a whole chicken and a couple onions (with some water, but I never saw him add anything else) in a big pot, and that was his dinner for the week. He also ate mayonaise sandwiches - two slices of bread with a thick layer of mayo in between, and nothing else on it.
And after living with him for a few months, I found out he'd been in a mental hospital for a while, though I never did know what for, and he seemed pretty stable to me. When he moved out (he graduated & went to teach English in China) he left the pot in the fridge, half full of chicken & onions.
