I was thinking about it one night, but I've never seen one before.

In a way... Itazura na Kiss.
Watch the anime for an ending.
Though they improve on his animation I noticed after the first few episodes, so he begins looking not as ugly. x) He's /supposed/ to be hot, though...

is such a thing possible!?!?! haha I think since its aimed at younger girls, we'd want hot guys, so for an ugly guy to be the lead, I'd be shocked to see one

I'm cheating here by suggesting an ugly male lead in a josei:
Daikichi from Usagi Drop... so sad... I was like: how am I going to enjoy this story with such an unattractive male lead?! But it turns out, this is one of my top favorite mangas!!!

I always thought the male lead from Kare First Love was...
....I know, I'm weird

pretty weird looking. He had these "fat/chubby" looking lower cheeks and just a weird looking face in general/kind of reminded me of a baby's face

Miman Renai - He's supposed to be considered "not-so-good-looking".

This is seinen, right? There, the norm seems to be plain male with attractive female.
You know, I've never seen such a shoujo manga. The closest would be the ordinary, scrawny boy in Mint na Bokura, but on the other hand, he's really cute when he's crossdressing.

FFF I always forget that one's not a shoujo...
Scrap my original response!

And I'd doubt that there ever be a shoujo where the male lead is "ugly." Shoujo is directed towards a younger audience, a demographic that may not be able to handle the atypical commercial romance that doesn't involve attractive people. I'm not saying that the younger generation is shallow per say, just that they're not so fully cynical as we grown-ups who can accept that physical attraction isn't everything in a relationship Besides, at that age, you've been brainwashed into thinking that all storybook romances only involve attractive people anyway.
On another note, a manga-ka would want her shoujo to be successful, and I couldn't think of another way to turn off readers than to introduce a not so great looking guy as the male lead.

I agree with your first line...off-topic, but how can you find Ren ugly? XD dude, he's practically number 1 on my bishie list. 8D But yeah, it's all in the person that sees it. if that made any sense, lol.
And I agree with the previous post, I doubt you'll find a shoujo where the main male lead is supposedly ugly. That's pretty much almost impossible.
