I'm curious how many series there like this out there.

Please don't recommended a gag harem or something that undermines the very difficulties the concubines face. An example of this would be Edo Never Sleeps. While the story is charming, they paint the oiran life in rosy hues.

Examples are:

Sakuran: Isn't this such a beautiful story?
Oooku: Reverse harem.

Oh, and some requirements for the brothel would be:

Most women are there against their own will.
There is a sense of slavery and servitude.
A sense of cut-throat competition common within harems.

Nothing too shounen-esque. No Ecchi, as well, please! All else is ok. (Though I prefer non-yaoi, I don't mind yaoi/yuri)

Cookies for non-Japanese examples!

Are you okay with short stories?
Brothel: Women's Territory - the 5th chapter in Yama ni Sumu Kami, - revolves around Ju Fang Tang, a Chinese pleasure house.

@Allez: Sounds great! I'll definitely read it. (Edit: It's great! It really is. Thanks so much!)

@ajcoolim107: Are you certain? I'm pretty sure she's the only wife.

The female lead in Yama ni Sumu Kami's fourth story is a prostitute, but the story doesn't revolve around that aspect of her life.

Hinata no Ookami has an oiran character, but she doesn't show up all that much (volumes 1 and 5, to be exact).

@Kuraha: Thanks, I'll read Hinata no Ookami. As for Yama ni Sumu Kami, it's a great story, but Allez has already recced it.

what part of Oooku is realistic? O.o

There's Go! Baajinaru Hanayuki, but the main character is a typical ditzy girl. far away from realistic

and there are a LOT of yaoi brothel. all of them hate being there and forced to slavery, and find some love along the way.

... You're right. That was a far stretch. I totally forgot about the title after I typed it. THOUGH one could argue that it's realistic because the premise was fairly well thought out...

Well in that case, it would mean that there is no such thing as any sort of realistic fiction, because all different people act differently. That wouldn't change whether it be a harem or a school (for lack of a better example). What I am looking for, however, is a plot that is fairly thought out, and where the characters are rational and realistic. An example of what isn't this are those horrible I-fell-in-love-with-my-rapist shoujos. So what wouldn't be realistic in a harem would be an innocent girl finding true love. It would really be hard to incorporate all people into one character, so if you go by that standard, unless someone can create quantum fiction, it will never be realistic.

Did you read the entire volume of Yama ni Sumu Kami or just the story Allez recommended? The story I had in mind was "The Plum Blossom Fan," not "Brothel."

I haven't read Delivery (probably never going to), but it might be what you're looking for. From the summary, it sounds like a bleak story.

Hana no Hime is a tragic story of a girl who's forced into polygamy marriage. so i guess it can be called harem, she's like, the 5th wife. and it's realistic all right.

and Ieraishan, Moyu was real enough for me.

@Kureha: Yes, I read the entire volume. Once I find a story I like I tend to stalk every series the mangaka makes. Too bad mangakas can't have 9 arms and live on 1/2 hour's sleep biggrin

@Hespia Klarerin: Those sound great! I'll definitely check them out ^_^

Although I don't care too much for harem or brothel stories, I do want to point out that they were a fact of life for some people. And while I doubt that things were always rosy there, conditions were liveable.
(Unless you're just commenting about the kind of story you want to read, in which case ignore my comment)

Anyways, I just read a yaoi novel called, Girou no Koimizu or "Love Water" (horrible name that does make sense later in the book) recently released from June.
Despite the title, it's not a story gushing with bodily fluids, but a well thought out and well written story about a young man who was brought up in a brothel in the Meiji era, who falls in love with a new customer.
And the lead isn't a courtesan (yet), but rather a servant, possibly in training to be a courtesan.
The rules of the brothel are intricate and restrictive, with sex as only one part of the interactions.

And the translation is good. Beautiful language. Passible editing.

@ Kayue: Well, I requested that because I was interested in mangas that portrayed the difficulties of brothel life. Also, it was to dispel happy-go-lucky shoujo/shounen prostitution stories. (I've encountered a few of those). So while that was a request, series that can thoughtfully show the brighter side of things certainly are very welcome. Girou no Koimizu sounds great, I'll definitely read it, thanks!
