well.. thats actually different for each people, for me i would only turn vegan if im having health problems and if its the only way to prevent me from dying.. well, you shouldnt question other people's beliefs! to each his/her own! laugh

Maybe people shouldn't question your questioning of other's beliefs? If we didn't question each other's beliefs once and awhile, nobody would be thrown in the nut house for worshiping the flying spaghetti monster or for thinking the world is flat.

How dare you question my belief in the Flying Spaghetti Monster and His Noodly Appendage!

But seriously, there's nothing wrong in questioning people's beliefs, only in persecuting them for having said beliefs.

I could never give up eating meat, it's too darn tasty.
But for anyone interested, Peter Singer gives a few very solid arguments for vegetarianism (is that a word? I think it's a word) in his essay Practical Ethics. Scroll to page 50 for his opinion on specieism.
His arguments were strong enough to almost make me give up meat, almost.

What a modest proposal.

Haha, I see what you did there.

You know you're a nerd when you get that reference. Ya, I'm one too

Cannibalism, especially at the top of the food chain has a lot of repercussions, namely PRIONS. Mad cow disease was a disease that originated from farmers grinding up cow carcasses to feed to...cows. Similarly, such diseases occur when humans eat other humans as well. In some tribes, a family would eat the deceased. Men would get the brain while women would get the muscles, and what ended up happening was a wide-spread disease amongst males because they ingested the brain. Once again, this disease is caused by prions.

... I agree that if you consume prions you're pretty much finished, but that's only in people affected by prions, that One tribe on the other side of the earth is affected by prions, and prions are extremely rare, you have a higher chance of getting prions from beef than you do human meat, and prions have nothing to do with cannibalism, it's just that they just happened to spread in one specific tribe because they ate each others brains, it's definitely not the origin though.

And cows are herbivores, they don't eat other cows like pigs eat pigs.

honestly i dont get why animals like cows and sheep should have rights...they were created to be eaten, and even if they're not eaten by humans they'll eventually be eaten by some carnivorous animal (or even carnivorous plants!)
food chains exist for a reason,we NEED to eat both plants and animals in order to grow healthy
but oh well i can understand why some people refuse to eat meat, for instance i just CANT eat certain parts of animals ,like livers and such ,out of pure disgust...however meat remains a very important source of protien

It takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just 1 pound of edible animal flesh. According to the USDA and the United Nations, using an acre of land to raise cattle for slaughter yields 20 pounds of usable protein. That same acre would yield 356 pounds of protein if soybeans were grown instead-- more than 17 times as much!
Producing the grain that is used to feed farmed animals requires vast amounts of water. It takes about 300 gallons of water per day to produce food for a vegan, and more than 4,000 gallons of water per day to produce food for a meat-eater. You save more water by not eating a pound of beef than you do by not showering for an entire year.
Food for a vegan can be produced on only 1/6 of an acre of land, while it takes 3 1/4 acres of land to produce food for a meat-eater. If we added up all the arable land on the planet and divided it equally, every human would get 2/3 of an acre-- more than enough to sustain a vegetarian diet, but not nearly enough to sustain a meat-eater.
On top of this the industrial world is exporting grain to developing countries and importing the meat that is produced with it, and thus farmers who are trying to feed themselves are being driven off their land. Their efficient, plant-based agricultural model is being replaced with intensive livestock rearing, which also pollutes the air and water and renders the once-fertile land dead and barren. Pretty much, if everyone was a vegetarian, there would be no world hunger.

I do eat meat, but in moderation-- I've tried being a vegetarian, and ended up anemic, so I had to stop. If every person in developed countries cut down how much meat they ate by 25%, there would be enough food to feed 4.6 billion people in a sustainable way.

i disagree. we currently produce enough food to feed 3 times the earth. the problem isn't the amount but rather the distribution of food.

I believe having more sustainable practises in agriculture and the removal of poverty in the world are more important factors then just not eating meat.

i'm previously a vegan. only stop because i'm not living on my own, unable to control what dish to prepare everyday. so, rather than dump uneated food, i just chomp them all.

i do not see something wrong in eating meat. they are a delish (and i don't care about animal right). but if experience allowed to talk, eating vegan diet is not short a delish too. and it gives much benefit, mainly made you feel much healthier than before. one obscure benefit is letting you sleep less (and you can read more manga). XD. oh one more. when you eating vegan diet, when your stomach empty, the hunger you feel is rather good. you know your stomach IS really empty. not filled with rotting flesh yet to be digested.

I briefly experimented with being on a vegetarian diet before and was kinda into animal rights for a while. The vegetarian diet did okay in controlling my weight but I was extremely depressed all the time. However! I gave up on all that for a few reasons:

1) I'm now on some meds that make me hungry all the time. Sure, I eat mountains of fruits + veggies every day but I've been warned to maintain a proper diet or my meds won't work as well. Well, since my medical situation is somewhat serious sooo... any thoughts of going back onto that diet just flew out of the window. I was told to avoid anything that makes me extremely depressed. bigrazz

2) Well, after some time, I decided that according animals rights, tends to elevate a certain animal group to a status higher than the rest of the groups. That kinda like defeats the purpose of maintaining ecology and can result in a very skewed population growth that threatens the balance of the food chain. Furthermore, I'm strongly against drawing attention to an animal species just 'cos it's cute. Then if it isn't charming, cute, or whatever, does that mean it's something that should be abandoned? And humans come first: it's 'cos governments often waste too much money on useless budgets or schemes or indulge in corruption, that's why in quite a few countries, you find people resorting to illegal logging, overfishing, etc. in order to earn an income.

I'm not against treating animals kindly though but sometimes, I think humans need to really think twice before say, trying to "pamper" a species by isolating them away from their own habitats and depriving them from learning how to hunt or defend themselves. Of course, I acknowledge that human pollution(land, water, air, and even the freaking space), refusal to use birth control, overfishing by large fisheries, deforestation, dumping of unwanted drugs into the rivers/seas/oceans/ etc. have largely turned this planet to crap. The tendency to think that the government knows best, that humans know everything, etc. have only made things even worse: Fukushima incident(setting up a nuclear plant in an earthquake/tsunami-prone country) among the long string of ecological disasters.

And no, even though I read guro, I will never indulge in cannibalism. That's just plain gross. dead

I honestly don't understand it either...I hate animal cruelty and such, but when you buy it to eat it's already dead so....and it's delicious and it has lots of good stuff in it for you as long as you eat it right. And besides, it's really part of what animals are here for! It's the food chain, it's all natural man. If we don't eat them then something else will.

no meat!? O_O i cant actually do it... on good friday i really almost die.. i stay up until 12 midnight then chowdown on coldcuts on steak... biggrin i dont really think its a healthy choice... but in some rights vegetarianism/ vegan(ism) is a force to be reckoned with. ^.^; but i dont think that i could take that kind of daily pressure.

Greater excess in food supply would drive prices down, making it more accessible to the poor....maybe. Also, with lower food prices people will have more money on their hands and might even donate some of it to the poor! (doubt it, but whatever)

Anyhow I don't eat meat simply because the sight of blood makes me want to hurl. Nothing moral or anything, although I do cringe at the thought of animals being slaughtered.

And as a result, less people would use land to produce food, bringing us back to where we started.
