I'm looking for a manga where someone has their great love--passionate, or comfortable, or whatever it may be, but something that can definitely be billed as a once-in-a-lifetime experience--and then gives it up, permanently, for whatever reason. This can be personal integrity, or outside responsibility, or anything really; I just want to see a manga where love is important but not the most important thing in the world.

Bakuman (though he doesn't give it up)
Spoiler (highlight to view)
"Mashiro...which is more important to you, me or manga?"

"...I can't compare them. Of course they're both important to me. But if you're gonna put it that way, manga is more important."

A Night of a Thousand Dreams maybe...

Bokura wo Tsunaide (also doesn't give it up)
