I second a bunch of these, Mars, Kirai, Nana especially. Oh and Torikagoshou no Kyou mo Nemutai Juunintachi is lovely, the art is great.
I would add:
I love her
Sensei >.> yes they are both student teacher >.>
Skip Beat I know it doesn't technically fit but I really love her relationship with Ren...
*looks through her lists and starts listing off ones she's liked with non annoying heroines*
Cousin
Hotaru no Hikari
Ashita no Ousama
Oishii Kankei
... wait... a lot of those are josei... well they're good either way

I'd like only shoujo, please! Josei is obviously easier to find realism in, and I've read almost all the josei available in English, anyway.
I really appreciate everyone's recommendations! It's such a fine line between being 'in love' and being unrealistic about the guy you're in love with, sometimes - I appreciate the time some of you have taken to make that distinction in your recommendations, giving me details and everything. Thank you!

I'm looking for a shoujo heroine/protagonist who actually has realistic ideas about romance. She may or may not be interested in it herself, but even if she is, she doesn't have weird, surreal ideas about glittery princes or knights in shining armor or 'cute' devils (huh...?). Guys are real people to her, just like girls are. They're not mythical creatures or aliens from another planet.
Ok, this seems like a manga that is against what you said in this short text above, but I would strongly recommend a short manga called Osuteki Darling (a small amount of smut warning). I even reviewed on this, so you can read my previous reiview to get the real gist of it (at the end of this post), but the summary on the regular manga page posts an extremly different idea then how the main girl really is.The summary on the manga page makes her seem ditzy and fantacy crazed.
Anyway, here is the review:
I loved how this story was NOT your usual smutty shoujo story, although it was still sexy. The girl is strong, not stupid (Even works in the library, and loves books), and when events actually take place, she has proper emotions and a very realistic thought process on the way she handles things.
The boy is not a b*stard (and yet still pretty perverted, but without going to much overboard, so even some non-smut fans would enjoy this)
And if anything, this story seems like an observational guide to a a healthy romantic realationship, which does not have the constant threat of the couple breaking up, or other popular gimmics, but it still enforces an intresting plot, which is very captivating and more then a little interesting.
There is no cheap cliched tricks that are done in many other mangas over and over again, and even when you suspect a cliche, you will be pleasently surprised! I very much enjoyed this manga, and I found it very refreshing. Who knew a complient relationship could also become so sexy?
Cons:
The only con I could point out, is that the art at the start has extremly girly looking men, but towards the ending of the manga, the art is much better with a more mature hand.
Rating: 10 / 10.0

I totally agree with you guys.
I'm biased too and HATE STROBE EDGE! I gotta say, she was really annoying because of her obsession with the guy she "loves." I mean, give the guy a break and get over him already. It's that simple.

It sounds like you are looking for more Josei rather than Shoujo. The heroines in Josei have more realistic ideas of romance rather than idealistic.
These were exactly my thoughts.
With some kind of experience concerning romance:
Gozen 3-ji no Muhouchitai - Realistic and light-hearted. One of my favorites.
Nana - Uhm. I'd say one of the MC kind of "realistically" idealizes men, if you know what I mean. But that's just a passing thing as she matures. One of my favorites again.
Torikagosou no Kyou mo Nemutai Juunintachi
Wisteria-Colored Sky Apartment
Mizutama Puzzle - Male protagonist POV.
Piece of Cake
Deep Love - Ayu no Monogatari
Udon no Onna - Older woman. Josei to the core. Not sure if this is what you want, but it fits the description.
No/almost no experience:
Yeonmo - 15th century Korea. Disguised as king she doesn't have much time left to think about romance, but she has no foolish fantasies about glittery freak riding white horse and acts reasonably. Probably not what you want, though.
Paradise Kiss
&
Liar x Liar
Not sure:
Real Purple
Ano Ko to Issho
Six Half
Hope you'll find what you're looking for. At least at some degree.
Edit: I've just noticed your comment about shoujo-only... Uh. Sorry. -.-"

I second Akagami no Shirayukihime. It's beautiful.
Maybe W Juliet as well, I like how the main characters are very comfortable with each other. You can try out Emura's other works too.
