I kinda think there's been a thread like this, but maybe it was just a forum poll...
Or was it about movies?
Anywho, since it's about anime, this goes to the Chatter Box.
I'm the type of person who likes the authentic feel.
Dubbing ruins that for me.
It could be a matter of habit.
Are the things you watch subbed or dubbed? Since when? Childhood?
Although the Disney movies and various cartoons I
used to watch were in fact dubbed, I still grew to dislike dubs.
Maybe Disney films being an exception.
I can't stand dubbed films, and so I usually wouldn't watch a film that is dubbed.
I've heard people say that they find subtitles distracting (which just sounds lazy to me).
It's all practice and habit, in my opinion.

Ooh how very true.
I've watched some of the shows from my youth in the original language... Some were WAY less fun (especially Ducktales, Darkwing Duck and even Winnie the Pooh).
Still can't get used to some 'original' names, like Uncle Scrooge and even some catchphrases are just boring in the original language (dutch translations are often bad, and sometimes that's what makes it good ^.^).

I want subs, because I don't want every character to sound the same as
on every series on Cartoon Network. Dubs cannot compete with seiyuus.
Besides, I always prefer the original to anything.

Generally, subs are the only way to watch anime. However, some exceptions:
Disney with Hayao Miyazaki films have been fantastic.
ADV was generally good with dubs, but two that stick out are Golden Boy and Those Who Hunt Elves, absolutely hilarious, also Spriggan
Manga Entertainment with Ninja Scroll
I honestly prefer the Dragonball Z dub over sub
Some Gundam titles, such as Wing and G-Gundam, but I can watch either
Tenchi Muyo was pretty solid
Robotech, because hey, its a classic
Vandread, great sub or dub
Street Fighter II V, honestly thought the dub was better than the sub, the English actors had more feeling than their seiyū counterparts.

I usually prefer subs over dubs, most dubs i have seen made the characters sound like little kids, there are some good dubs and i would watch them if they were good, but generally English dubs suck but some dubs in other language like Chinese are generally OK. if the dub is good i would watch the dub over sub but most of the time if i hear a dubbed anime i just search for subbed version online.

Like one of the guys above me said dubs almost always sound like bad porn and it really annoys me how they always manage to pick the worst possible voice for a character, but a few sound pretty good like Johnny Young Bosch in Bleach. I prefer the subs mainly because the japanese have a way of showing more emotion when they talk, another good example being the guy who plays Lelouch in japanese (talk about dramatic). Plus their lips match the speech!

i usually like the subs better because they take there time finding the voices for the specific characters as opposed to dubs. also the voices fit better and as annoying as it is to find bad grammar in subs you sometimes find the funny ones and need to screen cap them.i also agree that they make the characters in dubs sound younger then they are. i dont like that.
i also hate when they have a woman voice a make part. but that happens in both subs and dubs.
as for miyazaki films, i love them all. subs and dubs.

I prefer sub over dub because the voices in Japanese tend to suit the characters better than the English versions tend to be awful or just plain weird. Examples would be Shikabane Hime, Naruto (the character, everyone else is fine), Hetalia, etc. Of course there are exceptions but subs are overall better, mostly because the english dubs end up changing the lines to suit the amount of syllables that the character is using. Plus the fact that certain network channels cut things out and edit appearances for fear of being sued. *coughs*4kids*coughs* But, I will say that there are a few dubs that are better than subs, namely Inuyasha. If the network channels just tried a little harder to find better VAs and stopped with the editing, I'm pretty sure the approval rating would be a lot higher.

haha this made me lol, but it is true. I don't wanna say that the voice-over actors don't try their best and work hard or anything- since i truly don't know...but, they always sound so bad. The dubs always sound as if the voice-actors didn't know what type of character they are acting. Sometimes they make them sound or overly pubescent when they are supposed to be more serious characters with just a tad of a comedic side.
Plus many japanese jokes and stuff becomes lost, so somethings seem out of place...

I always prefer the original language over dubbing. That goes for both normal movies, animation movies (like bolt, wall-e etc.) and anime. What I want is the original work, and the language is - imo - a big part of it. I don't want to watch a french movie with german dubbing, and I don't want to watch a japanese anime with english dubbing.
I live in a rather small country, so because our language is limited to a very small area, I've been used to reading subtitles ever since I was a little kid (since dubbing movies to my native language is hardly profitable). I don't find it bothersome in any way, actually I learn to write better in my native language and in english because of subtitles.

I almost always prefer the sub, simply because dubs sound weird to me even if I haven't heard the original. Seiyuu do it better. xD
The only exception is Hetalia, because dear god the fake accents the voice actors use make me laugh so hard.
