Yo! i am a new member and I have a question to ask. Does anyone know how long graphic novels are? if they are only one volume or if they can be many volumes? I am trying to create a graphic novel of my own and am willing to hear any advice? thanks a bunch! -_^V

I think it depends on the genre. If I'm not mistaken, 1 volume of a shoujo is bigger than 1 volume of a shonen.
What genre are you looking into?

you could always start out with a "one shot" which is basically a short story that is only a few chapters long.

There can be various lengths. From what I see, the length is usually around the late teens and early twenties. However, if you work is very popular, the series can go into the thirties or more. Single volume series are usually just oneshots, but one chapter can also be a oneshot (ie. Forever Honey). A volume from my experience usually is around 150 to 230 pages each with each chapter about late 20s to 40 pages (the first chapter ever is always the longest). I hope this information was useful (which is not very accurate since it's from experience only). Good luck with you manga.

Well it's actually a genre between Shoujo and Shounen but it leans more toward Shoujo.

It was very useful. Thanks a lot. What genre do you think will be most effective for people to actually read it?

It really depends on your target audience wether you want girls or guys to read it and then you have to think age group. You should have a basic idea on that when starting the manga and what kind of genre it is.

I find the best way to start is as a free webcomic and just see what happens.

Well umm... I'm no expert but to start you'll need a website and a comic ;P

Check around popular webcomics to see how they do it. If you are planning to publish it later, you probally want to find out a typical page size and use that, etc.

I'm not really sure what to say. If you are serious about it, get your comic up and running and submit the website to the many webcomic ranking/info sites like http://www.thewebcomiclist.com/ .

It kind of depends, but I think you should plan on making your's as long as you need to tell the story properly. If you only need 130 pages (about 1 volume), then stick with that. But if you think you'll be extending it, then plan accordingly.
