As it says, I'm looking for an action manga with an utterly insane protagonist. And not something like multiple personalities. I just want straight up bonkers.

Now to temper that, I don't want him/her to be a bad guy. No killing innocents or things like that... just mentally imbalanced.

Ah, also, I love a touch or romance so, if at all possible, that too.

Sounds like a good read if you find one. (^_^) I'll take a look around. I would also be interested in finding a manga like that.

Not really actiony, but I remember reading Nichijou a while back, and pretty much every one in it is insane. It's a gag manga tho, and I was under the impression you wanted something with a bit more of a serious flare.

Also, pretty much everyone in Gintama has some form of insanity. [Which you probably know] But once again, it's gag. Tho it is one of my fav series.

I think you should definitely watch all three seasons of Full Metal Panic (Full Metal Panic,Fumoffu & The Second Raid) & read Full Metal Panic Sigma---Sousuke is definitely bonkers laugh

They're all based off the original graphic novels by Shouji Gatoh (the story officially ended with the last graphic novel in August 2010)

You know, I've tried Full Metal Panic, but the MC always struck me as more weird than crazy, so not really what I'm looking for. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I'm not looking for gag or a strict humor concept, yet at the same time I'm also not looking for some super-dark tragic melodrama that has me wanting to eat my socks... know what I mean?

Dogs bullets & carnage bit off part of someone's face. For no reason. Crazy.

Black Lagoon female lead is crazy. Bubblegum chewing nun, sniper maid, and chainsaw girl with mechanical voicebox are also crazy.

I hate multiple protagonist formats, but I'll check out Black Lagoon.

Thanks, keep em coming.

The main characters in Sket Dance are also crazy. Tho I can't seem to find a manga that is actiony, features a seriously insane character, while not making that character a serial killer or being completely gag. (-_-) Tis very annoying actually.

Maybe Replica (?_?) Tho not really mentally ill, the main characters aren't really all there [ranging from not that bright to no sense of morals] while still being smartish and funny. I highly recommend it too.

I'm guessing by insane you mean either no sense of morals or just not quite right in the brain-aka does completely mental things at random.

I'm not too sure about Sket Dance, but I'll give both a try.

How about Zippy Ziggy? [Sorry for naming so many well known ones] The main guy is definitely insane, and smartly so. Tho less in the 'random mental acts' and more along the lines of 'thinks the world revolves around him'. It's hilarious, and while annoyingly ecchi, there is action and the funny makes up for it.

Srry I keep posting, but I can't seem to find a manga that hits the def spot on.

Maybe Jiraishin? He is not really mentally ill, but I think it maybe sort of fits, because he often use dangerous way to deal with cases and goes against higher ups. Sometimes his method is questioned (morally?), but it solved the case. He is definitely smart and has guts to take risk despite it maybe costs his life.

Or maybe Franken Fran, well, she is capable of anything, but she often doesn't think about consequence, that sometimes it leads to bizarre incidents.

Edit:
Trickster, she is definitely random, no sense of morals whatsoever

I recomend Kyou kara Ore wa!! The main character is nucking futs. He is selfish, impulsive, aggressive, a trickster by nature, and though hes not necessarily evil he does have lose morals. Hes predictable in the sense that you know hes going to stir up trouble in every chapter, but hes unpredictable in the sense that there is no telling how he'll do it.

I also recommend High School. main character of this manhwa is also a megalomaniac. This guy is liable to bring a fucking backhoe to a fist fight. he cracks his head open and ends up hospitalized 3 times in the first chapter. You get the idea.

Sociopaths
Trickster - Seconded. She's a sociopath that likes to screw up people's lives for no real reason.

Psychopaths
Kami no Kodomo - Not an action. About the life of a serial killer. Warning: really explicit.
Koroshiya 1 - About a psychopathic assassin. Warning: really explicit.

laugh Amen to that !

I couldn't think of any Action Manga that fits, but regarding insane main(s) character(s), I'd suggest Sayonara Zetsubou sensei, and some Kaori Yuki's work, especially Boys next door and Die.
Those are all shoujo though. Lying Mii-kun and Broken Maa-chan: Precious Lies is a seinen, but the protagonists might not be "good" characters, so I don't know if it's what you're looking for...

Edit : I also suggest Jigoku shoujo while I'm at it. Lots & lots of psychopaths in here, though not the main character imo. Aaaah ! I feel like I'm drifting further and further away from your request, sorry about that ! sad

I second Franken Fran! She's a kind person + total experimenting maniac, such a great combo. XD She sometimes harms innocent people unintentionally, but it pretty much stops happening after the first batch of chapters.

Hoshi no Samidare - Their insanity isn't very blatant, but it's definitely there,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
as you can see in chapter 2
