Lawrence Lessig may have predicted this outcome or worse in his book “Code and Law in cyberspace” http://codev2.cc/about
which is freely available

well I looked into this SOPA and Protect IP bill (with my not perfect english and my dislike of Law texts)
and came to the conclution that if this gets trough not only america but all internet users will be influenced since a lot of companies etc have their locations in america....
but the biggest problem is this:
Quote
The ‘Stop Online Piracy Act’ (SOPA) bill, combined with PROTECT IP Act, seeks to give the US Justice Department the power to force Internet Providers into blocking access to any website that is suspected of hosting or linking to copyrighted material.

because one of my favourite side is BU and since its just some information or news side normally there shouldn't be any problems but if somebody complains that this side somehow has copiright material or links to blocked sides they'll be able to just close it down without any way to protest against it...

did I get this right??

I'm American and I live in Texas. The thing that pisses me off is our government has better things to do than mess with OUR internet(WE pay for it). Why can't they focus on more important topics such as Gang infestation, Our borders, Organized Crimes, Infrastructure, etc(Just recently we had 2 Fathers murdered by masked men) Why do they dwadle around with the present, we need to think about the future(They're fucking with our future). Those politicians need to get the heads out their asses and learn that they are OLD geezers who are going to die soon because they are OLD. It kind of feels like they are getting paid to sit on theirs asses and just talk.
I'm still young and I feel like they are fucking with my future. I'm majoring in Computer Tech and it may not seem like it, but SOPA feels like it's hitting home. Which I'm sure it's the same for others across the U.S. mad

@REGIS_JOSE
Im not American, so i can easily answer your question .It's really simple, money. I only know about this matter that they wrote down here in this topic. But it looks like that the internet bullying is only a front to make this law trough, behind it is the entertainment industry lobbists. They can't make money from crime preventing, only spend. And the old geezers get for this law a really great summ of money. But this is democracy, coruption rules the world.

AFAIK Lahar Smith is the Texas US Representative. Why did anyone voted him in the first place?

not exactly close it, but basically block the website from being accessed by anyone inside the U.S.

Yeah, I just live in Texas, I'm origanally from Florida. Being raised in FL I grew up with a different mindset from a majority of Texans. Unfortunately I can't do anything about it(Majority of Texans=Republicans). But If I could do something, his ass be thrown out just for bringing up SOPA. Also, If i could, i would apologize to everyone, who reads scanlations and watch anime, because my state's rep. brought up this stupid idea.

Everyone check out this video that holds some super important info that could stop SOPA and pretty much screw over all of it's supporters.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJIuYgIvKsc&feature=p layer_embedded#!

If you can't get the video to your government legislation just having as many people possible see this video could help. If it goes viral, everyone will know.

If you think you are safe from it because you are in another country realize that with SOPA the US will try and have pirates extradited to the US tried and jailed.

We don't have much time.

I live on Canada and have lived there all my life. I have heard of SOPA and read up on it a bit. What the amarican government is trying to do is wrong. You don't censor something that is not your to censor. The Internet is the epitome of freedom of speech. America is suppose to be the land of the free but the way things ate going SOPA is going to change that for the worse. Don't worry Americans us Canadians are also trying to fight it for you! Chances are if this bill goes through not only will it effect you guys but also most other Internet users from all over the globe which is highly not cool. I'm glad Wikipedia and google are against it (two sites I visit often) good luck fighting against this bill I stand behind you guys! Gambatte!

you ever read those stories (japan does them a lot) of evil/greedy politicians, law enforcement officers, ect? well those stories were not exaggerations, while people were not paying attention it really happened, and with 3/4th of americans being the type of person with there head up there ass they still dont realize. sopa is probably just 1 small part of a bigger calamity to come, such as that f*ed up bill obama signed (indefinite detention) (cant believe i expected anything from him...) that allows the govt to arrest anyone on baseless accusations that can be forged by said people.

in all honesty i really do believe this farce of a presidential election, specifically the republican candidates, is nothing more than a guise to distract the american citizens. seriously none of them are taking this seriously, and you can tell by all the stupid s**t they do. these people represent the republican interest? again too many americans allow themselves to be blinded by the medias that are owned by the people who are deceiving them. (my conspiracy theory is that they all exist as puppets, controlled by a number of masters to make a disgusting mess so that one canidate can come out at the last min (representing there desires) to clean up there act and saving the citizens opinions b4 they completely give up)

our government is made up in such a way that if enough of them are in on it they can completely abuse the system, take the supreme court that is made in a way that if they dont want a bill to pass they can keep it in a perpetual lope; never being voted for and never acknowledging they are against it. indefinite detention shows how many are in "on it" 93 - 7... our govt. is corrupted and the people controlling it(the rich, job maker my ass) are still just getting started. the bull about how global warming was fake, was proved true again and again, now it is established as a fact, but all forms of media ignore it because americas (2)biggest corporations specify in oil (using fraking, riddle with huge amounts of controversy over it being damaging to the environment but ignored). citizens united, everyone should know this f*ed up law. money is speech as well....

i could go on and on. point trying to establish is, politics are rigged for and only for the rich, the only ones who can change it have been compromised, pleading to there sense of decency is pointless, and waiting for the next rinsing cycle of govt will most likely be too late to stop this fall..

edit: thought id add this, mitt romney pays 15% in taxe rates because his income is from investments, while the middle class paid 25-28% and rich normally (if they followed laws) pay 35% (in california the oil companies can get away with up to 5% with loop holes, cheats, political corruption). why does this matter? because in California my community college(BCC) lost over half its staff and 1-2/3rd of the available classes they had, the others are now on/off classes depending on semesters. a class i need to get into classes that will get me into more classes that will get me into college is not happening this semester, which will put me back a whole year(so far from what my counselor said, there still shuffling out classes)... the 99% have to pay for the rich destruction of the system...

Apparently, congress is holding a meeting about internet censorship and a majority of them are in favor of it.

I don't know too much, but I'm trying to spread the word.

But doesn't it affect everyone? ( I am just asking not telling) Because I live in the Bahamas, and I cant access some of my everyday websites because of today's blackout of some websites so imagine if the real thing rolls around

You might want to read the messages posted on those "blacked-out" sites. They went dark today in protest the SOPA bill. It's voluntary. Think of it as a hunger strike or something.
