I've been debating the usefulness of the the upcoming Wii U lately. Obviously I haven't used the wii u yet but I think that controller is just stupid and pointless. When I first saw it I thought that it was like a psp. I just think that if the controller has a screen its going to force a lot of your attention away from the tv.

Also it is said that Nintendo is trying to target the more hardcore gamers with the Wii U. I don't know how its going to achieve that with that controller. The new hardware means its going to be expensive.

So what are you views on the Wii U?
Do you think its going to top the sales among consoles like its predecessor or is it going to flop?

I think it's going to sell well mainly because of that controller you were talking about. The fact that you could continue to play the game on the controller is a very good idea seeing how there will be people who will buy this that have families, spouses, or friends that come over. And those people won't want them hogging the TV playing games all of the time. Besides, I'm sure that the same thing that happens on the TV happens on the controller so it won't be distracting at all (Unless you got some kind of disorder that always has you looking down at your controller at random times or something).

And it will be expensive, but as long as it's $400 or less when it comes out then it won't be much of a problem.

People can discuss the hardware all they want, but it won't matter unless there are good software to support the hardware.
How useful the screen is will depend on how developers choose to use it, nothing that Nintendo can do about if the other devs uses it poorly.
The "hardcore" approach isn't with the controller, it's with the system specs and its potential to run higher resolution games with greater disc capacity. The controller itself is a nice addition/distraction and offers an option of sorts with its screen, but again, only as useful as developers decides to make them.
The Wii U is currently looking decent in my view with its potential to run better looking and more detailed games. But having said that, 3rd party devs usually suck when it comes to developing quality titles for Nintendo consoles due to their(3rd parties) overly obvious desire to make money.

If the games are good, people will get the system to play it, regardless of how weird or clunky the controller is.

We don't really know much about the system yet so project its success is incredibly difficult. developers at this stage seem curious about the hardware so that's good for now but its Nintendo so most of their quality content is likely to be in house. The only thing about the systems shown is the controller and I can pretty much guarantee that it does appeal to any hardcore gamers even though its very cool and innovative. This last console generation has seen Nintendo separate itself from the other consoles and created its own category of gaming and the Wii U is likely to further that separation.

If it can support homebrew, it will be godly.

I pretty much concur.

Personally though if a new Mario, Zelda and Metroid (Retro Studios, not Team Ninja) are announced/released then I will pick one up.

Nintendo Consoles always seem to sell a certain amount. And this past cycle they showed that they can capture a lot of people that wouldn't normally buy consoles to get into a frenzy.

That alone might give them some decent numbers. And they usually go for cheap hardware to maximize profits.

I think we might see another cycle that was just like the N64, or Gamecube, or Wii, really. Nintendo has been doing about the same, even if the Wii did sell well.

Basically, a time like the NES and SNES is not going to ever happen again. Nintendo won't be on the equal or superior hardware. And third parties are not going to be selling this system.
