Well.. It was going to happen someday. I'm okay with them shutting down filesharing sites like megaupload, because a lot of the files were files you had to buy if you couldnt find them on the internet. IMO that's their right. We are gonna be shrewed in many years, if you keep on downloading everything you want. Then the makers get no money and might not afford the next game/movie/whatever it is.

i bought lic manga when i had a job, screwed me over 2000+ dollars that could have been 500 or less, f**k the lic companies and there over priced series, why i switched to the japanese volumes despite not knowing any japanese.

like hell id buy the s**ty hollywood movies, there bad, anything worth watching is to old to sell. holly wood actors are horrible, writers never even seen a good movie, and they use cg's for almost everything, the cost for movies should be at a all time low but the prices always rise,($5 for a day rental on demand) its not because of piracy, i dont hear anything about these multi million dollars companies suffering, only b**ching. like hell if these companies started making more money they would choose to make less by lowering the prices, like how they'd make less by paying there fair share in the first place.

i buy every single game i have except visual novels/japanese pc games, because the japanese hate american consumers for some reason and refuses to sell most of there products overseas. with over 250 ps1-2-3/game cube/xbox-360/psp games (and the 300+ i sold to eb (for a f**ked up rip off of its actual price)) ive easily spent over 5000 on games though ive cut down a lot with no income for the last 2 years. (oh and dont have the ps3 atm, ps2 (both) broke down no money for another, game cube broke, xbox broke, xbox 360 needs a 125 dollar hardrive to play xbox games(microsoft screwed me over with this and the batter pack), otherwise i only have 4 games for the xbobx so ya screwed there)

for music i absolutely hate the music companies and absolutely refuse to hand them money. 99% of there music is trash to me, rehashed crap that pales in comparison to its predecessor. at this point the only music i listen to is instrumental remixes of other anime/touhou songs tammusic for example. if i ever do listen to company owned music its most likely kpop off the psp radio system or occasionally youtube videos (the user uploaded ones if i can).

but as i said b4 i dont have a job, haven't for awhile, in a place where theres 10 people for every job and every businessmen is looking for only trained supervisors-managers im pretty screwed, japan has it f**ked up too but id rather try my luck there at this point (with no current japanese skills beyond 1 semester of japanese, knowing hiragana/katakana only, i only have 1 class left b4 i have no more classes, school canceled a lot of its none core classes) so ya, even "IF" i got money i wouldn't give them any money and id think the same would go for most of the ppl here, they cant afford lic manga's ridiculous prices, thats why those lic companies are crashing.

So if S.O.P.A is passed, it affects other countries? Doesn't that break some laws or something, because the internet is a free and world wide thing? confused

Unless something changed while I wasn't paying attention (which is entirely possible) ICANN is still under US control.

IANA and the previous companies that managed TLDs were, while ICANN is international (they have 3 centers in the US, 1 in the EU and 1 in Australia). FBI should only have jurisdiction in the ones in the US, and only can freeze or delete the TLDs. You have had to be able to access via IP (and you can't). And they still shouldn't be able to arrest no one unless thgey were in the US when the warrant was made (or when they sued MU), that's out of their jurisdiction. And they can seize the files in US based servers (unless international laws were against, that I don't know), but not foreign ones.
They CAN'T close MU (but they did), only make it unavailable from the US.

PS. The people they arrested are 3 germans and a dutch that reside in New Zealand. Both nationality and place are out of jurisdiction.

Sucks for people like me who have a good connection and were able to get
pretty good speeds, as Megaupload was one of the fastest hosts.
Not too happy to DL 100 or 200 kbps...

Out of curiosity, what counts as a good speed? My max is around 200 kbps nowadays and before this I was on dial up.

100/100 mbps.
Depends where you live though. US has got really shitty speeds,
but ordinary net here, excluding backwater places is 25/2 mbps,
ADSL2+. Not the best average globally by no means though.

Well, it's all relative. Mine is around 500KBps, but in the US, you can get around 2MBps download speed. Mine is fine because I don't stream , but when internet connected tv (google tv/apple tv, etc) gets mainstreamed, you'll need higher speed if you want to watch HD streaming on tv plus bandwidth is the new cash cow for ISPs/cell phone providers (i.e. data cap).

Mine averages at 500kbps but peaks to 1Mbps at times.

I think the point here is that if Megaupload is gone Mediafire is in danger of being the next in line for the chopping block. So it the preference isn't the issue.

I'm annoyed when my download speed is below 4MB/s (Netherlands - Fibreglass) Megaupload was and Rapishare is one of the few filehosting sites that feature decent download speeds on free "accounts" (>2MB/s on avg.)
Sad to see it go... Sigh, back to Torrent/DCC/FTP/DC++/Usenet/etc./etc. Having grown up in the time of DCC (IRC), I'd love to see it make a comeback (other than DC++, which seriously needs a massive makeover).

Anyway *woohoo* SOPA and PIPA delayed, hopefully indefinitely.

Shit, I payed for premium last week. Now this suddenly happens?
If Megaupload was taken down, I fear for the internet.

Are we safe using torrents?

Well the question is which is next? I am pretty sure that a lot of scanlator groups will have a hell of work re-uploading their hard work somewhere else...

I lost a lot of personal files, photos and even my reports that i kept as a 'souvenir' of my student life
because of external hard drives crashes. It happened to me twice dead and i never learned from my mistakes roll eyes ... Anyway, because of it i seriously thought of storing all important infos in a server as MU, fileshare...etc. I was thinking that it will save my important data from anything that could happen (except a mega virus that kills internet), but with what happened now with MU i can not trust any sharing server...

well time for me to go out to buy a 3rd external hard drive........

after black-out 24 hour for wikipedia and some other sites, the next day i found out megaupload was taken down. i'm surprised and a bit disappointed cause i happened to wanna watch a movie that day. lol. it's such a luxury for me to have some free time to watch any movies, and mu was an one of the most accesibble source to find a movie.
we got fbi putting their hands to catch people in newzealand, today it's just megaupload, who knows next time.. they start doing this after it's clear that sopa and pipa bills won't go through.
I'm hoping this incident was not the beginning of internet suppression and more for manga community to be affected deeply.

i find it amusing that ppl here are upset...i mean you bithc and moan when narutofan.com were around or even that mangafox/simmilar sites makes huge profits
that they even make groups stop in protest

this setup is just SOOOO much worse

and if you dont see that...then i feel sorry for the world we live in

[im all for piracy and stealing lol but i dont like it when ppl make a profit from "normal" pirates...we dont need the big boss pirate leaders that can take baths in money thaks to us visiting their filehosting sites]
