I would like to get into one piece but I have a dilemma, I read the first chapter in the manga and it was awesome, probably one of the best first chapter I have ever read then I checked the anime and was disappointed with the 1st episode and it seems the 1st chapter of the manga is in episode 4 of the anime.

I KNOW that the manga is good but if you had to choose would you watch the anime or read the manga ?
I just want to select one thing and stick with it.

choosing is hard, because if you're really into a series, would you stop when you know that the other medium is already a bit ahead?
anime is entertaining but it takes really much time (532*20min=177h) and well the manga is one arc ahead... (but if this goes on it will eventually catch up or "welcome fillers!")
So I guess it's up to you...
I tried the anime first, read a few arcs and got back to anime, just to continue both now...
I wouldn't say that one thing is worse than the other (well if you don't count those flashbacks to the last episode...), afaik both mediums don't differ much story-wise and art-wise, but I guess anime is better if you are looking for action (you can just show things better if it's animated).
and well, unlike other works, I din't really see much scenes that would be better of static and non-moving...

so to sum it up:
anime: if you have much time and want to see more action...
manga: if you have less time and want to have a bit more story a bit earlier...

read the manga and then specifically find all bamf moments in the anime.... which is including almost every instance of zoro appearing

oh and when they leave logue(sp?) town skip quite a few episodes till they are entering the grand line.... trust me you dont want to see the horrible crap that they call filler.

Read the manga. As for the anime, I think it best to skipped the first major arc (East Blue Arc). Maybe even skipped the second major arc for the anime. I love One Piece but their fight scenes don't translate well into the anime. Naruto did a way better job.

Watch the anime for a while, simply to get to know the voices of the characters. The first few fillers are actually quite decent so you can watch those and judge for yourself instead of listening to other peoples' opinion. At least, that way you will have an opinion of your own. You can watch the anime until you get tired of it, or until episode 210 or so. I would say, even, just switch to reading the manga once the Skypeia arc rolls in but the filler after it is comedy gold, and it's rather short at that. After that, it mostly just goes downhill, drawing things out as much as possible, to the point where the progression is 1 chapter per episode. Right now, OP the anime is simply not worth its time. But the first few arcs definitely should be watched, is what I think.

You haven't watched some of the fights in the later arcs huh? Especially when they start airing in 720p huh?

I like both equally, but sometimes, especially the tear jerking parts are way better with the anime because of the music and the overall atmosphere IMHO. But the filler arcs (which there aren't that many compared to Naruto/Bleach) sucks because they're super boring for the most part.

That's what I meant. One should watch one piece anime for the extend characters' interaction and relationship. One Piece anime series is huge >__________________< I don't think yankee will have enough patient to wait all the way to the 720p. Like I said, best skipped the first 2 arcs and begin with the sky island arc.

I would say Anime. There are very few fillers in One Piece. Ii you have the time ofc. I can recommend watching the anime and then continue where it stops with the manga.
There are however some very small differences between the manga and anime. For example some of the big wounds in the serie is shown in a less "gore"? way.

Seeing the anime is great since it has great voice actors and soundtracks. So there is a little bit more to the anime i would say.

The anime butchers shit for kids. You will never know how Luffy got the scar under his eye just by watching it. Other things happen concerning important characters such as Sanji (Zeff) & Whitebeard only in the manga.

The manga any day, it's not even a choice, it's the obvious answer.

well if you have lots of time then why don't you try the anime? xD
I've read and watch one piece and I can't really tell which one is better...
the anime is time consuming but it's worth it!

is this not basically the same topic as that one on page 5
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=22120
but with a twist

i say manga
many reasons
the biggest reason
I HATE LUFFYs VOICE ACTOR
whenever she opens her mouth it just hurts my ears
i like her as Kuririn in dragonball but she just destroys Luffy

i think i am the only one who hates her as luffy

or am i?

The manga wins hands down.

The anime suffers from the usual problem that plagues nearly all adaptations, filler.

There is too much unnecessary pauses, drawn out scenes, all to drag out the ~20 mins.
The action in the manga is way more intense than the animated version, mainly because I can animate it myself in my head much better than what the commercial version does.
