The whole reason that many scanlators do this is so that a title will get recognized and become popular here in the US.
=> This is no longer true. As a matter of fact, extremely popular series such as bleach, one piece, naruto still have scanlation weekly. Besides, there are thousands of scanlating groups, If for example, your group's ideal is to get the manga license in the US, it doesn't mean other groups have the same opinion as yours. Also, lot of groups aren't in the US, they don't really care about whether or not it is licensed in the US.

As for where scanlators get manga, it's obviously import from Japan. However, how many volume do you think a group will buy and does it really matter to the whole sales? What I meant was that generally people should not import manga. Majority people either don't know Japanese or don't want to pay for high shipping cost so they aren't really buying anything.

I agree with you that the whole mess started because of the sales of manga began to drop but...It already happened anyway. That's why they try to stop scanlation hoping that sales will go up. If the sales suddenly goes up after all the scanlation has been ceased, it will make them go after all the scanlation groups more severely. Small groups get scared easily because NO ONE wants trouble. Because of that, we must not buy manga to make them realize that the more they push us, the more they suffer.

What I meant was that they scanlators would begin to rely on fans registering to their individual sites or RSS feeds to stay up-to-date on their scans instead of posting on the MU, especially groups that scanlate licensed manga.

Still does not work because people would not have a clue of their existence or what they are working with.

All groups need to advertise, especially newly formed ones and without some form of centralized communication area they cannot do that.

This idea has many flaws in it:
1/ When we pay for manga or something, We want high quality stuff and not some crappy one.
2/ Digital form is extremely easy to pirate. Believe me, there will be many people who will take it from the legal sites and distribute it illegally. Sort of what's happening in the gaming and music industry. No matter how high their technology is, there will be guides to teach people how to download it.
3/ The big, popular and mainstream titles won't be there for sure. It's not easy to get permission from the publishers because they can get more profit via other forms. Even if a manga that has high quality translation but crappy story, people still do not want to pay for it.
4/ The scanlators will receive a small cut of profit as stated in the article. It sounds really good but how much will they get? Probably, a few dollars. Profit needs to divide to the site owners, mangaka, and even the mangaka pulishers. Also, a group will have many members, thus, the profit still need to be divided. Again, if the translation is done by amateurs, customers get pissed off. Professional probably wont do it.

That's why they can only go with yaoi titles since it is not mainstream. Plus, those people know that they belong to the minority so they probably willing to pay for it to satisfy their emotionally/psychologically needs. Sort of how normal people pay for porno magazines.

I have a pretty good idea about scanlators as I'm a member of a lot of groups and have been around the scene for about 9 years now. Just because there are some who continue to do scanlation after something is licensed doesn't mean the majority think that way.

As for me... I own about 600 volumes of Japanese manga and it grows more and more every month. If you have true love for something you support it in any way you can because you want to see it do well. Plus as I have quite a few friends (who were scanlators or still are) who work for the publishers. I'd hate to see them lose their jobs because people didn't support publishers.

If you like a series buy it. I read the Bleach release every single week... but I also own 21 volumes of the english manga and will own more once they release the next box set of it. Nothing beats the feel of a manga in your hands.

A better use of your time would be to send letters to the companies (not hateful ones) letting them know that you don't like the titles that they have selected and let them know you want better quality series that you would actually buy and not the crap that they put out 80% of the time. Maybe then they would listen to their audience.

How dare they take away our pirated manga that we didn't pay for and have no right to the first place. It's just not right!

Yes, the rest of us live in the real world, where things generally have to be paid for with money. This may also answer your question about why we go to those annoying job things.

This is the end of scanlation as much as closing down streaming sites is the end of fansubbing.

Nor, it doesn't mean what you think it means. You're looking for the word "and".

Either that, or say "We must buy neither Domestic manga nor import manga."

Please Xiong Chiamiov who knows the meaning of the word "nor" more than me explains to me what it really means.

As for your suggestion, If i were to put the word "and" in my title, the whole meaning would change to "We must stop buying manga AND import manga". I hope you know what it really means.

As for the sentence: "We must buy neither Domestic manga nor import manga", it corrects grammatically. However, it doesn't give off a strong suggestion/recommendation/persuasion as my title are.

Besides, I'm not a grammar nerd, I apologize if there are grammatical errors.

Who cares, online readers are a waste of bandwidth anyway. Although I guess downloading manga is a waste of hard drive space.

Anyway, there is no reason for MU to close though, that would be about as reasonable to IMDB because they host information on movies.

No wonder your idea clashed with mine. We are a polar opposite. You who owns 600+ volumes probably belong to the selfless side and as for me who has read more than 600+ manga but owns not even one real hard copy probably belong to the selfish side.

It's pain me to admit it but i'm a real and professional leecher and i bet many people out there are the same as me. I do not pay for stuff even though i really love it. Games/Manga/movies/music etc... i just pirate them all XD. I don't feel proud doing it but I don't feel bad either.

Nothing beats the feel of a manga in your hands...but I don't want to say goodbye to my little pocket money that I have.

Downloading manga would be a drag.....a waste of hard drive space.
I personally don't think mangaupdate is going to shut down since we are not hosting any manga, but instead we provide information for them.
