heres the big question. Where the revenue gonna come from. If DMG gets a part of the revenue that means DMG wont be the ones paying correct? I also don't think that some agency is going to pay for all this for the public so simply sit back and enjoy. So naturally it does come to say that we will have to pay for it. In my opinion the scanlators should just plain team up with the authors and cut out the middle man cause I can see many problems lying ahead with someone like that.

and this dude is pretty much telling them to get a job doing their hobby, well fine... but he's also telling the scanlators that he would profit from their non profit works and give them some share and he take 1/3 of it for doing nothing. Nice thinking man.

No, they're looking to make money, just like the online readers.

OpenManga was announced several months ago and has yet to materialize. It seemed overly idealist and nonsensical way back when it was first announced, and considering that no news has come from them since July, it's safe to say OM will never happen. Good riddance.

I don't see the problem here... Scanlation is ILLEGAL [some people seem to forget that or just don't care]. I enjoy reading scanlations since they usually have series that aren't available in English, but given the opportunity I would go for a legal copy before a scanlation.

If this idea brings more series to english LEGALLY then hell I'm all for it.

What I think though is that all the people out there [the majority from what I can tell] that don't care and only want their cake and eat it too will never pay for it. THen this idea and WNY idea like this will die a quiet death.

it's technically in the gray area of the law. if a series is licensed and disturbed or if a scanlator sells their scanlations then it is illegal however scanlating unlicenced manga without profit can be viewed as a first amendment thing. especially since translating is interpretative and could be viewed as parody (ok that last part was really stretching it but you get the point). without any court case or explicit law to say otherwise it really cant be defined as legal or illegal.

Actually it's entirely illegal. You can argue that merely translating the words in the manga and distributing those online is not illegal but copying the actual work without consent and distributing it is illegal, no matter how many edits you make to it. It's just up to the author or publishing company whether or not it's worth the time and money to pursue legal action.

You can't distribute the translations either.

If you translate it and keep it for personal use (meaning NO ONE ELSE besides the translator sees it), then it's okay... otherwise, no.

It's a load of crock! The arguments against this are numerous. And coming from a leading publishing firm, I can say that this will stiff the middleman and not take off.

If this goes online the community will be split into Scangreeders and Scanlators where the best follow the money and the newbies own unpopular series. *Arr*, how I love capitalism. Replace the intrinsic motivation with a monetary one and you get corruption even in a honor based system.

I guess its easier to convince yaoi publishers lol
