i bought the last two volumes of kurogane a few years back and it just so happened that the scans for those volumes were released at the same time. i read volume 4 on paper, stumbled upon the scans and read the fifth volume on my computer. that's my story

Support this, support that. No. If I can get it for free, that's exactly how I'll get it. I can understand the preference of having an actual material version (paper), but I'll just settle for downloading it. And no, I don't plan on buying it even if a series gets licensed in English.

It is a misconception that you buy anything with e-books.

All you are doing is licensing the product. You can't move it from device to device. It might get erased at any damn time without your knowledge, consent, or even choice to prevent it.

Look at what happened with the Kindle and the books 1984 and Animal Farm over issues about whether or not they were still in copyright or not. It was deemed that in a few countries they weren't but in the US where it counts it is so Amazon erased them from the Kindles.

People were given a rebate, but still.

Unlike actual books that you can own and make corrections or comments or write notes in the beginning to give to people or have autographs from the author you can't do that.

And if there is a legal issues about the content then it can be erased from your device because you don't 'own' the e-book or anything at all you are just 'licensing' the product.

And god help you if the DRM of the e-book is no longer supported by the device. Or that the e-book format has glitches or the device no longer supports it. You still have the file somewhere on the device but you can't access it and you can't move it to another device to be able to read it.

And with the way that the publishing the world is moving away from e-book readers, e-book readers, e-book formats, and towards aps on devices like the iPad where they can control the distribution. Then you don't even have the e-book on the device at all. Better hope the publisher and Apple don't have 'issues' and decide to delete the ap from your device.

They do do that you know.

So until the publishing world opens its damn eyes to the fact that I want to own what I buy then I ain't buying a single e-book, ever.

Although all of these are risks of ebooks, it is also possible for a fire to burn your book, for your cat to destroy your book, or for it to simply yellow and discolor with age. With ebooks, even if you accidentally lose your reader, you can still redownload all of the books you purchased.

For me, the likelihood of ebook rights being revoked is so little, plus they refund the money so I can always go and buy the paper copy if needed, and the benefits are so great (convenience of carrying around; built in dictionary; ease of access; improving my carbon footprint; etc) that I fully support ebooks and now refuse to buy most books that are not ebook format. smile

Actually your wrong:
1. There is away to reformat the ebook file and turn it into a pdf file so that you can store it onto your hard drive (google it if you don't know). So if the retailer does erase the book, guess what? You now have a back up copy.

2. There are sites out there now where you can download ebooks that have been converted to pdf files. Just like you can share manga you can do it with ebooks as well through such sites as mediafire, megaupload, etc....(google it if you don't know)

3. Since the release of the iPad, ebook sales (as well as piracy) has been on the raise.

4. There are also apps on your Apple device for Kindle and Nook but you can share your ebook library with your mobile devices and your computer. There is also away are Apple's DRM.

5. Almost all of the ebook devices (except Kindle) use the same format (epub) which allows you to read your books on any device.

As long as there are corporations that want to restrict what you can do with the things that you buy, there will always be someone out there trying to find away around it.

you can pretty much give away manga with good ad support. the cost of manga comes from people taking their cuts. if the mangaka made $0.20 a chapter it would be a huge improvement to what they usually make. the ebooks allow the publishers to sell directly to the buyers and eliminate a majority of the costs.

Then let me ask you this... what if that price would reflect an increase of sales that otherwise wouldn't occur? You seem to be forgetting that one of the biggest issues, for some people not buying their manga, is actually the price. That price would simply mean that no one would have any reason to not buy it anymore.

Also, the argument that they would have costs publishing this is false because an e-book is actually easier to publish than a normal book since you don't need to print it and they could make it available directly from their web site. Add some publicity banners there and you can even make an extra profit out of it (online manga readers anyone??)

And you are also forgetting that the paper volumes would still be available to those that still prefer to read a paper version over a digital version. So, as far as i see it, this price would simply mean that they would be able to spread their sales market and would make it easier to even distribute their work in foreign countries, since they could sell it directly to the final customer without the extra taxes.
