This week's poll comes from lynira. To be honest, I can't think of a specific instance of a special edition manga right now... But if the specials were good, I'd get it! I'm also a PC gamer, and I tend to buy those special editions if they're available. Like the collector's edition for StarCraft II! $100, but so worth it!

You can discuss this poll on our forums here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=25200

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related):
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Would you give up anime/manga for Lent?
Choices:
Sure - votes: 947 (6.2%)
No way! - votes: 2429 (16%)
I could give that up, but I don't celebrate Lent - votes: 2514 (16.6%)
I could never do it. Besides, no Lent for me - votes: 2289 (15.1%)
What's Lent? - votes: 6991 (46.1%)
There were 15170 total votes.
The poll ended: March 26th 2011

Ignoring the people who don't know what Lent is (hopefully now you do?), it seems more people would not give up manga for 40 days. Now what if it wasn't for Lent but for some other reason? Then what would you give up?... Are you willing to make sacrifices for anything? Just something to think about.

a) I can sacrifice something I truly care about it if I see any sense in it or because I need to protect something. But for Lent? I'd reduce the amount I read at most. =)
I also don't get why people who don't even know or care for Lent should give up their manga... can you see the connection?
b) Special edition ^^ Interesting poll! It would definetly depend on the manga and on the specials, but I would probably consider it wink

if a special edition were out at the same time the original is released and had features that really make it worth..then probalby yes.

but if the special edition comes out a year later after you allready got the original and features a few extra levels/pages/items/whatever...then screw it.

If I had the money and loved the series. And your comments come off very judgmental and preachy.

"Now what if it wasn't for Lent but for some other reason? Then what would you give up?... Are you willing to make sacrifices for anything? Just something to think about."

That's really uncalled for.

Not a christian so doesn't affect me, but wouldn't giving up something like reading manga for lent be a bit pointless - as you would just end up reading more afterwards to catch up, so you wouldn't really end up making any sacrifice, just reshuffle around the various things you do forwards/backwards a month or so.

Sacrifices could be made if they have some meaning. Meaningless sacrifices don't bring anything good to the world and satisfy only the fundamentalists's "beliefs". If I stop reading manga should this feed the starving children in Sudan? Just something to think about.

Fully agree about the judgmental statements.

Think about nature for a moment, all those resources wasted to print and deliver it, and build a place for you to keep it! Anything but electronic version is outdated consumerism abomination that should never be made in the first place.

Do those all-volumes-in-one manga count as special edition versions? xD If so, I already bought one. And I know I love getting some special edition games. Though I hesitate with anime sometimes. Sometimes. Depends on what I'm getting.

I guess in the case of manga - Special editions would include artbooks.
I have an impressive Ah My Goddess Artbook which contain four chapters from the manga in color. The rest is fun facts, history of the series etc.
Worth a read for all interested.

I agree about the shuffling around bit. I've always had a problem with things like this where people feel the need to do something religious just because they are expected to or because everyone else is. That being said, I am a christian and I do at times giving things up when I feel like God wants me to. But when I do, it is permanent. I don't pick it back up later. It's about a relationship with God, not about traditions people came up with.

On a side note- Lent is strictly a Catholic custom. It is not observed by christians in general.

I thought the entire poll was rather weird in the first place, and a touch judgmental, given that Lent is very much a Catholic practice--an it oughtn't be a surprise that the most votes were for "What's Lent?" How about skipping polls about non-secularized religious stuff, in the future, except for ones purely about if you know what it is in the first place.

Agreed as well.

I used to be a fervent Christian until my grandfather passed away. I remember my parents prior to his passing tried really hard to convert him to Christianity but when he asked if our grandmother would be with him we said no (she passed away much earlier before my parents became Christians). In the end he just simply said, "I'm not going anywhere without her." And it hit me pretty hard. At that moment it felt like the most Christian-like thing to do was to actually give it up. I just couldn't live with myself hoping that someday I'll go to "heaven" while billions of non-Christians will go to "hell". My grandparents included.

Like someone else said, what's with the catholic/religious stuff, anyway? Is there an assumption that most of the people who visit this website is Catholic or something? I thought last week's question was probably one of the worst ones I've seen in a while (apart from the recent faux pas regarding Japan's earthquake). Would my suggestion 'Would you give up anime/manga for Vesak' make it to the poll too? Ridiculous!
