As the title states, perfect examples of what I mean are the following (all of which I really like):
Gokukoku no Brynhildr
Seiketsu no Haguruma
Classmate, Kamimura Yuuka wa Kou Itta.
Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria (Novel)
Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge
Deadman Wonderland
Hekikai no AiON
Tripeace

The series doesn't necessarily have to be seinen or even romance, just something like the series I listed. Also might be odd, but if you have any recommendations for books or other media that fit the theme please post them as well, thanks.

Thanks for the recommendations, they're spot on, unfortunately I've already read (/am reading) those.

Beside obvious choices (i.e. same mangaka's series like Elfen Lied) I can think of:

Novel
Zaregoto (novel)
Battle Royale (novel)
Boogiepop franchise (I prefer the anime)

but if you hope to read something of Hakomari's level give up already since it doesn't exist.

Manga
World Embryo
Vampire Juujikai
Mirai Nikki
Kurozuka
Btooom!

Anime
Darker than Black
Steins;Gate (still have to play the VN) <--- don't miss it!
Mawaru Penguindrum (maybe)

VN
Ever17
Fate Stay/Night
Chaos;Head
G-senjou no Maou (this is H)
Cross Channel (this is H)

PS: try Steins;Gate!

I'll try to stay on the romance topic
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=8996
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=47446
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=1000
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=1229

not romance:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=5708
http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=355
anything by
http://www.mangaupdates.com/authors.html?id=671
http://www.mangaupdates.com/authors.html?id=669

most seinen tend to be dark (at the very least, dark on the tripeace level) so a category search with seinen, romance, series with at least 1 release, no yaoi/hentai/etc if that's what you want.... Should leave you a good list to sift through when you're bored

Oh. And most things scanlated by gwr: http://www.mangaupdates.com/groups.html?id=1204

Don't tell me that no . Otherwise I have at least heard of all of (and have read most of) the things you recommended except for one VN but I'm not too big on those. I only ever "played" Planetarian and Narcissu (though not the prequel, I don't think I could handle it haha)

Well on the other hand I guess you have convinced me to finally go watch Steins;Gate, and look into finding a place to read Zaregoto. Thanks again.

Good recommendations

Again I have read most of the stuff you recommended, but such is life. I hadn't heard of Yamikin Ushijima-kun though, looks like it might be good, thanks. I'll also have to go through the author pages, I have read a few of their works but didn't really know about the others at all. Already noticed GWR though, they do translate quite a few good series.

Yeah, I actually really liked it and should have put it in the op with the others. Thanks though, since it's one of my favorites I'm glad that I would have read it (due to your recommendation) even if I didn't find it the first time haha.

I really should populate my lists/make them public next time I'm looking for something...

Dance in the Vampire Bund
Blood Alone
Gangsta
Velvet Kiss not really dark, but not comedy either.
Basilisk but you've probably read it
Shingetsutan Tsukihime

Well if you read Zaregoto, lower your expectations to enjoy it. I know there are a ton of people who think of Nisioisin as a genius, but I think he's way overrated, I can't especially understand the fuss about his Monogatari stuff. It's a matter of tastes probably, but if you liked Hakomari as much as I liked it and for the same reasons, it's gonna be hard to find a mistery of the same level (especially if you want the same sense of foreboding). I'm still wondering how every crappy novel which comes out recently get tons of adaptations and a masterpiece like Hakomari didn't get a single one, especially in anime we only get barely watchable stuff lately (i.e. Another, you can try it if you're especially bored but don't expect too much of it). If you're ok with lighter stuff I'd say that [m]Gosick (novel)[/m] (edit: uh? there is no more the entry?) has better cases than Zaregoto, I didn't recommend it firsthand since it's not dark, but the plot is better. Or if you're more into sci-fi, you can also try Issui Ogawa's books (maybe start with the Lord of the Sands of Time) and Seikai no Monshou (Novel) trilogy, but they too aren't really particular dark (but still some of stuff you mentioned in the first post isn't very dark either, so they should be fine too).

At least I managed to get you to watch Steins;Gate, which is definitely a good thing. smile

And just a fyi about Cross Channel (I remind you again that it's an eroge in the case you want to try it) / Hakomari comparison
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
CC has the same scenery (time reset) of Hakamori book 1, there is even "the world engulfed in white when it resets itself"
