This poll from our member 0sirt is about the extra content in a manga series, such as the bonus chapters, the omake, the author's notes, the oneshots that have nothing to do with the series itself, etc. When you encounter those, what do you do? Read or skip?
You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related):
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903
Previous Poll Results:
Question: Communicating with authors (via letter, email, phone, Facebook, Twitter, etc)
Choices:
Yes, I do it all the time! - votes: 169 (1.6%)
Yes I have, but only once or twice - votes: 570 (5.3%)
I would if I knew how (their address, etc) - votes: 4606 (42.5%)
No, not interested - votes: 5500 (50.7%)
There were 10845 total votes.
The poll ended: April 7th 2012
Not a very popular poll, but that's alright. Most people (including the people who didn't vote) would probably never wanna contact the author. Too shy? Or perhaps no reason to except to say "good job."

They are rather annoying, most of the time I don't know if I already read them (
Some character stats or some side info is welcome, but an extra that is a whole new story, this gives trouble for rating it if the extra is really boring, but when the real story is really good, the rating will dragged down(most extra's are on the end of the volume). Well, this issue is bigger with series/volumes that contain collections of short stories (impossible to rate, which genre/demography is the whole volume now(?), if it contains a shoujo, a shounen and a Yuri One-shot).
I skip those extra's preferable, even if it's difficult as you can't add the extra's as read or unread in the Mangaupdates reading list and you don't know if you read them later on.
If it would be possible to check and uncheck each release that appears on the updates page (example: last chapter of Bakuman appears, you read it. You go back to the release page, and behind each post( were the download links were in the past ), their are the icons completed, wish/waiting, and skip icon( maybe also a bought icon). And by a simple click on the icon "completed" behind the release, and you're list is automatically updated with it.
This would be handy if you want to read only one one-shot, from a collection of One-shots.

Sometimes I read them, sometimes I skim them, sometimes I ignore them. It depends on the series and the mangaka.
This is kinda difficult to answer because I either read them or skip them depending on two things:
If they're part of the chapter release, I'll read them.
However, if they're released separately, chances are I'm not going to bother even looking into it.
I find it really disappointing when I see a release for a manga I'm following, only to find it's an omake or something XD

This. I probably wont bother unless they are released with a full chapter. It's not that I dislike them, either, it is just that they don't really add anything, so I wont go out of my way for it.

Extras and omake, I really like, so I'll read them right away. I find the informative ones pretty entertaining (I like extra info), and the comedic ones are really funny sometimes. And because they're like an extension of the story I'm currently reading, they don't seem like interruptions (which I hate).
I don't like reading more than one story at once though, so I'll most likely save included oneshots for later.

Depends. If it's something like an actual chapter (like say, it's named as chapter 5.5) I'll read it, but if it's only something like author's notes or stuff like that I tend to skip it. Stuff like those 4-koma style extras to do with the mangaka and their companions during work is something I skip, even if it is translated
I've never come across a random oneshot within my volumes I'm pretty sure.. I think I might have read one but other than that I probably wouldn't read them.

It depends. When I'm not into a story, I read them. When I'm very much into the story, I skip them. I wouldn't read them unless I re-read the manga again.

Sometimes an extra or omake actually turns the story around completely!
Usually, though, it's just a playful brief postscript to the story or a gag reel. Sometimes the gag reels can be not very funny at all and I usually just skim over them with an
I don't know why readers would save the extra for later? I would be surprised if more than a few people vote for that option!

Hm... I usually read them pretty soon because I enjoy random comedy and such.. >.>;; Or seeing what's happening on the side during the main story..
Although I'm lazy and don't often get to them too soon unless they're released with the chapter unfortunately.. Dx

re: communicating with authors, I think most would be put off by the language barrier.
