I figured this was worth posting since it doesn't have the same outcry SOPA had and I haven't seen anything on MU about this in recent memory.

It looks like the US House of Representatives is putting CISPA, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, up for a vote around the 23rd. You may have heard of this on Twitter or from Facebook's shitty defense of the bill.

Originally, the bill included crap about intellectual property but it started to get the son of SOPA treatment and may eventually be left on the cutting room floor. Now they may just settle on letting government and businesses secretly give each other private info on its users with immunities to fines or jail time, hence why Facebook is suddenly happy to support this tripe.

Edit: And the damned thing passed a day early. -cispa-just-got-way-worse-then-passed-rushed-vote.shtml

I doubt it will got through. Even if it does I doubt the president will sign it now that the chances of him getting reelected are getting more and more iffy day by day. I am wondering what Facebook's real motive is supporting the bill? They could completely go against it and continue with what they been doing turning in any suspicious activity of suspicious persons FBI is investigating in links to a crime.

Its tough to guage. It isn't getting the same attention from Television or the vitriolic opposition from internet tech giants that killed SOPA. I wouldn't be surprised if it passes the House since it has support from both parties.

Unless there is a big enough stink, it may very well pass the Senate and Obama. One thing's for sure though, if Obama passes this, I'll vote for Romney instead. If both candidates are going to shit all over my rights, I may as well vote for the Etch-a-Sketch promising me a tax cut.

As for Facebook, the bill makes it easier for them to give, seek and collect user info since cooperation is voluntary and it effectively grants them immunity to prosecution so long as they claim there was a cyber security threat.

Motherfucker. mad

All I have to say is that if this toxic waste gets past the Senate, Obama better keep his promise and veto it.
