Let's list the similarities:

- main hero - a boy, weird hairstyle, sees ghosts, has some spiritual power, meets a girl and gets dragged into the supernatural world, gets a sword, saves the girl many times, etc etc

-"the girl" - black haired, good fighter, killed someone close to her in the past ( posessed by a spirit ), comes from a noble family, gets saved a lot, likes cute things

- "the meeting" - the guy and the girl meet in a supernatural situation ( some ghostly thing comes after the guy), and as a result, the girl transfers to his school...and class!

- sidekick with glasses ( Ishida Uryuu / Kyouko-chan )

- sesshouseki instead of Hōgyoku ( magical, transforming..."thing" laugh )

- Urahara and Izuma - very similar characters ( outsiders, law breakers, quite mysterious guys, the only difference is in what they wear on their heads laugh )

- bad guys wanting to crash the city ( Devil King appearance and Aizen planning to use the spiritual energy of Karakura Town )

- powerfull organization behind the girl, with an old person in charge

That's all I can think of now.

The question is - is all that really a bunch of coincedences ( after all, it's a shounen manga ), or can we talk about some..."inspirations" here.

Well, I'm judging by the publishing dates...and what if it's the other way around? eek

Yes, there are many similarities here. But there's also another manga that's similar to Bleach/Ga-Rei (I remember Moritana did a topic on that - click). I don't think it's purely coincidental, somehow. Even the art is somewhat similar.

I must say that Yomi reminds me a bit of Yoruichi.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Not that Yoruichi is on the bad side, mind you. I just think Yomi and Yoruichi are similar in leaving people who trusted them. Then again, Izuma and Soi Fon are a bit similar in feeling betrayed. But still, Izuma is Ga-Rei's Urahara and that's it! They both have that roguish charm to them biggrin. But, ahem, I'm getting off topic.

Another similarity - Keigo and Ken-chan's friend from school. Don't tell me you don't see the similarity biggrin

That's all I can think about now. I'll probably add something more when I'll get my hands on volume 5 of Ga-Rei.

Never read it. But as the story goes the differences become bigger no? Doesn't it involve...

a kyuubi/nine-tails or something?

Lol...probably the main shounen simply has to have a pervy friend laugh

@doc - true, it goes in a different direction. But only in details dead

Umm, no, the entire plot is travelling in a different direction. Just saying is all.

Lol, i think everyone thinks its similar to bleach when they first read this manga. But i come to like this manga more than bleach because it actually accurately has a good storyline to it.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
I really liked Yomi, but we won't be seeing her again. booboo.

Bleach is really stretching out whilst ga-rei focuses carefully in one structure, it's got portential if enough audiences are given.
I have to say that the art is FANTASTIC! it's a style that's new to me.
Izuna is a hilarious bastard,

Spoiler (highlight to view)
As a guy, the first thing he did when he turned invinsible is to go for the bathroom where the girls are. LOL!

I guess, to me, the biggest difference between bleach and Ga-Rei is the greater emphasis on the main characters relationship in this. Kubo Tite just can't get a couple off the ground for all the tea in china.

well I recently went to the Entropy scanlator group site and it said that Ga-rei has been dropped. Currently there are 5 volumes out in Japan and they all have been scanlated but if the project really is dropped then I guess we won't be seeing anymore Ga-rei until some other group picks it up.

Good comment laugh

Tazman, I think it's because some other group has released a few Ga-rei chapters. Entropy staff has a sort of bad luck with their projects being stolen...

Anyway, back on topic .
Spoiler (highlight to view)
One more thing, that's similar for Bleach and Ga-rei - quest(s) after a mythical creature - the Fox in Ga-rei, The King in Bleach

shizuru vs. orihime:
-fairer hair in opposition to kagura/rukia
-problem with sibling (sister/brother)
-both are hanging around main character in the obvious way
-both are well equiped by nature biggrin

but the differences are much more important. shizuru is more interesting as a character (I can't stand inoue... I'm not exactly sure why, though).

but, putting all this similarities aside- I'm enjoying Ga-rei sooo much more. this is probably coused by my inclination for less expanded stories... hajime's providing the story in a kind of elegant way, smoother than kubo tite. hajime improved all his ideas.

ga-rei and bleach is quite similar if u put it that way but u one of the difference is that..
in bleach rukia shows up for a couple chapters gets owned.. then dissappear for a lot long..
while in ga rei, kagura and the main guy(forgot name, sorry dotn read in english) they are actually there for every chapter..

and one more duno if im right but i got a feeling this manga is coming an end soon

watch the anime 1st
its prequel before the manga

IMO i prefer the anime because of it animation accuracy, and i prefer its serious atmosphere to the show
the manga is kinda typical shonen -_-
