Ilegenes - Kokuyou no Kiseki fits to a T, but it's josei. There's not really romance (unless you choose to depict it that way), but there's more than enough plot. (It's quite.. Um. Suggestive.) The art is absolutely flawless and even more perfect than Death Note's style. The plot is interesting, but the scanlations move much too slowly. D: The sequel hasn't even started being translated.
Death Note was my first thought, but Light isn't driven by revenge, just his own egotism... :T
Code Geass fits, but the manga is not an option. Plus, Lelouch never really falls. He's noble until the very end, and atoned. However, it doesn't seem like your kind of anime.
Kuroshitsuji has a protagonist that is driven by revenge for his damaged pride, but the anti-hero is mainly his butler, Sebastian, a demon that he had formed a faustian contract with to attain his goals. Ciel does find himself doing cruel things (circus arc was amazingly written and drawn), but his soul is so pure and noble, I think it'll be a long time until he really becomes corrupt. Or maybe even never. XD Welp, try it if you're bored. Though it's even more suggestive than Illegenes.. XD We fangirls like it dark, okay.
Sasuke from Naruto fits perfectly, but he gets annoying. Fast. :T The newest chapter was amazing, though. Renders his revenge unjustifiable--and now Sasuke's just ruled by hatred. :c But Itachi resembled Snape so much that I just broke in two.

Try Kimi no Knife, I'll second Holyland and Tower of God. This could apply to the secondary lead of All Rounder Meguru
