I want a story with a pretty well developed plot line and somewhat dynamic characters. And I don't want any generic shoujo fluff with "love at first sight" crap and sparkly googoo eyes bugging out at each other without them even knowing one another. I want REAL genuine and gradual romance only with an actual interesting plot to back it up. It can be quirky, sweet or even a bit insignificant but it should still be there (but I would prefer if it were less cutesy/mushy).

I do love shoujos though, I've just run out of good ones to read. Shounen series are also fine, as long as they fit most of the requirements.

Examples: (series I found memorable)
Koi dano Ai dano
Kimi wa Pet
Oresama Teacher
½ Prince
Gakuen Alice
NG life
Normal City
Nineteen,Twenty-one
Taiyou no Ie
Seiyuu Ka
Superior

I'm looking for both something different and/or similar to these.

Requirements/Preferences:
- Strong Female/Male lead (or they can go from weak to strong)
- Would prefer if it had some comedy in it or was an adventure series (if it's not a shoujo). Slice of life and most other genres are fine too.
- Love shouldn't always be the most important thing to the characters
- They should be pretty innocent and good natured
- The characters should be best friends or at least pretty comfortable with each other.
- Don't really care what it's about as long as the story is unique and interesting.
- Any type of manga series (though I do appreciate clean art)
- And of course, the romance should be very gradual and realistic (or maybe so slow it's unrealistic).

Excluded:
Yaoi/Shounen Ai
Yuri/Shoujo Ai
Ecchi/Hentai
Pretty much anything too explicit

And I've already read a lot of the well known ones so suggest more underrated ones if you can.
Some also might be on my wish list but I've just put them off for certain reasons.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, sorry if my details were vague. Thanks smile

Oooku - it says mature but there's nothing explicit
Please Save My Earth
Rough
A Million Pound Love
Wandering Son
Basara - this one is pretty violent

Watashi no Ookami-san and its sequel Dear
Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha.
Saiunkoku Monogatari
Hoshi no Koe

If you don't mind a long shounen series with slow romance on the side, I also recommend Kekkaishi (and Full Metal Alchemist, of course).

Also, have you read Tsubaki Izumi's other work: Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun? It's a really cute 4-koma romantic comedy. The only reason I would not recommend it is that it's extremely short (being a 4-koma).

@PsychoKitteh - I've watched the anime but I'm not sure I want to go back and read it (since I know most of the plot already)

@Roughan - Thanks I'll look into all of those they sound good! I've heard of most of them smile

@Suxinn - I've read Watashi no Ookami-san and watched Sainkoku Monogatari but I'll look into the others. Not sure if I'd want to read all of Full Metal since it's a lot... and I've read all of Tsubaki's works ;__; I wish there was more

Immortal Rain. The romance isn't considered subtle, but the plot doesn't center around the romance so it all works out pretty well.
Ashita no Ousama. It's an old manga so the art isn't that great, but it's pretty interesting.
Fukuyadou Honpo. Another one where the art isn't so great, but the plot's good so it doesn't matter much.
Chihayafuru. I've only watched the anime, but romance in it was pretty subtle so I'm quite sure the manga is the same.

Actually History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi fits most of your request, except it's an ecchi series. While the volumes I read weren't very explicit in terms of ecchi (if you ignore the chapter cover pages), but I heard ecchi goes through the roof later on...

Edit: I second Immortal Rain, should fit your request rather well.

Hm, spontaneously Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun and Five had been coming to my mind, but I guess you already tried them. So, how about ...

* Aozora Yell - Pretty realistic and the romantic storyline develops rather slow.
* Eikaiwa School Wars - It may look a bit old school, but the storyline was actually quite nice.
* Venus Kisoukyoku
* Nineteen, Twenty-One - If you don't mind webcomics, this once is pretty realistic and gives of a warm feeling without rushing things

And, I haven't started reading the following ones yet, but maybe they will be a match?

* Kore wa Koi no Hanashi - An irritating age gap, but it seems to be well handled by the author
* Oboreru Knife - Not sure, although the comments caught my attention

Beauty Pop?
Love Gashapon 2nd story
Beast Master
March Rabbit similar to Nineteen, Twenty-one
Please! Mr. Bear!

Oh wow, I didn't expect to get so many replies so quickly.

Though I may not respond or always give feed back I will check out all of the series from now on (I'm running out and I'm desperate OTL)

Also let me reinforce a few things:
- Though it can be Slow or Subtle romance, I think slow romance would be an easier fit since I read a lot of shoujo
- I am looking for more adventure series with subtle romance HOWEVER if it is something along the lines of that please let it be less seinen(some are ok)/ecchi/melon-sized boob girls/only appeals to guys kind of thing.... because I'm a girl (and a pretty conservative fan of realistic stories) but don't get me wrong I still admire action-packed plots now and again.

Sorry to be too be repetitive and picky -__- just trying to give you a better idea

Already Read:
Immortal rain (loved it)
@kichiX: I've read like 90% of that whole list but I'll look at the others

but thanks for you're suggestions everyone. Even if they don't suit me I appreciate your help. keep them coming biggrin

If you don't mind Shonen, Sket Dance might fit the bill. But romance not only came out slow, but more like slooooooooooooow.

For Shoujo, I think an older classic series might be good for you because they usually take things slow. I recommend all work by Hikawa Kyouko. Kanata Kara is my all time favorite and I still consider it a masterpiece. Miriam is a bit older, but the art and story is still top notch. The newest work Otogimoyou Ayanishiki is also really good.
