Hi guys,

Okay, I'm looking for a series that's similar to Avatar: the Last Airbender, not necessarily the storyline, but in some of the elements that make it so awesome:

1) Quest format (optional) - The protagonist goes through a journey and travels, meets people, new places, etc...I say it's optional because if a series fits for 2 and 3, then I can do without this one.

2) Character development - This is a big one for me. I love for the characters in my manga/anime to have a LOT of development. I want for them to be constantly changing or growing or improving in some way. And I want this change to be built up over a long period of time subtly until at one point you realize how far that character's come. I basically want the characters to have inner conflicts that they need to overcome to complete their quest. A really good example of this, I feel, is Sarasa from Basara.

3) Antihero - (I think this is what this character is called). This is your typical kind of character (I've put his name in spoiler, just in case people haven't seen Avatar yet). This character has to be one of the main characters, and if he (has to be male) is the protagonist, even better! Someone who starts out bad, confused, unable to differentiate between right and wrong due to a pretty sketchy past, but then finds his way eventually and becomes an invaluable hero/member of the team.

So I know it's a bit vague (sorry in advance), but any suggestions would totally make my day . I'm not picky about genre or style or anything like that.

Ok, I have two suggestions, both being incredible manga. Neither really fit #1, there are times in both manga they go on short journeys to find stuff but never like in ALA.

Nabari no Ou- AMAZING character development! This story is the all time BEST in that area, I haven't found one yet that has compared to the wonderful character's development and relationships. In this one there are also characters (a few actually, all mainish too) who are at first considered 'bad' who change sides and such like. Very, very, very good.

Pandora Hearts- Great with character development too, characters go through changes that at the beginning I never would have imagined 0.0 Really, this will BLOW YOUR MIND! And as for the anti-hero type... well, there are people who aren't what they seem... maybe the characters aren't considered 'main' but they are essential to the plot and still very much a part of it.

Just READ these two manga!

Break Blade
Id (androgynous but male)
Knight Run (female main characters)
Kurohime (female + male)

None of these fit the bill perfectly, but they all have many of the elements you're looking for, if not in the same format. Also, they're all a bit more mature than Avatar (which, although aimed at younger kids/pre-teens, has a lot of references only understood by more mature viewers, is not really as deep/dark as the above series).

Didn't see it here, so I recommend Fullmetal Alchemist. Always a classic. Loads of character development, a quest, and at least two major antiheroes. There's not a whole lot of dark parts (lots of it is traveling), but it can get rather violent and gory at times. But the amount of character development is incredible. All the characters have changed by the story's end.
