You mean series... there are plenty of different Castlevania games.

Best one, still, is Symphony of the Night for the original Playstation. I've played Castlevania's before (NES, SNES, etc) and after (PS2, Gameboy & DS) but this still was the best. The others were okay, and improved on certain aspects, but were usually lacking in another aspect. Only SOTN had everything in perfect balance in one package.

It's kinda sad me liking Castlevania, and yet not playing SOTN, but I have played the 3 for GBA and the 2 for DS, I gotta say the 3 for GBA are frikken good, except I never finished HoD, yeah the DS ones are exactly as described above, great here but lacking there...let's hope the next or at least the 3rd game for DS is an improvement. Oh and I guess I'll buy the Castlevania for PSP once I get enough money!

I agree, SOTN had the best graphic out of the series, the music was done superbly I even downloaded the OST, the moves were done great and it had a great story
Out of all the castlevania games it was the one that really made me feel like i was in that castle, the ps2 games are great too but the enemies were HARD, i dont know if you had the same trouble as me, but I beated Dracula on my 15th try dead

Are you talking about LoI, yeah I haven't even finished that yet, I have to get this rune or something then I can go fight Mr. Longtooth, It's just sitting in my room ready to be finished, but I just don't feel like it right now. I haven't played the second one for PS2 but once I'm 17 you know what I'll be wanting!

When I passed LoI I literally went dancing around my house, the game was so Fricking hard not as hard as Curse of Darkness but even so the last bosses were no cookies

This brings me back to a rant I made on 1UP.com about how much I don't really like Castlevania...

Quote
Castlevania, Why have I not fallen in love with you?

I am currently in the middle of Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance and I think I've finally found the reason(s). To get it all out of the way, I have played Castlevania games - Castlevania 64, Circle of the Moon (gave it a good go of a couple of hours), Aria of Sorrow (completed), Dawn of Sorrow (1-2 hrs), Harmony of Dissonance (6 hrs), and vaguely remember my friend playing/me trying Symphony of the Night (it could have been another Castlevania game) on the Sega Saturn.

I sort of enjoy the games but all of them get boring after the initial first few hours. The reasons why I don't enjoy it immensely suddenly came to me during a playthrough of Harmony of Dissonance.

It HAS TO BE the backtracking. I don't mind a little backtracking here and there but I swear there's a crazy amount of it in Castlevania. I cannot just let it go so I'm always going back to check if an item/skill works or if I missed something on the map. I have to try to remember where all the places I need to slide or double jump are, but I never can. There's absolutely no help from an NPC or a sign about where to go. Someone or something guide me to where the **** I'm suppose to go! I shouldn't need to check a FAQ just so I don't have to walk from one end of the castle to another. Maybe this applies to just Harmony of Dissonance but I can remember feeling this way during the other games as well. Konami, you see that game The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass from Nintendo? Do you not see that you can write on the touch screen and allow people to mark things on their map? (note: I do not believe they added that to Portrait of Ruin)

It MIGHT BE the "gimmick" of soul collecting/card collecting/furniture collecting/etcetera (note: I'm not actually calling these gimmicks, just annoyances). I have to collect them but I hate doing so. Why can't I just have the normal assortment of holy water, daggers, axes, crosses, and create cool new ones? Why not just add secondary uses to them?

It COULD POSSIBLY BE the nonexistent story. I know it is what it is but I can't help but feel Konami could add a truly captivating story if they put their minds to it. It could be a typical cliche for all I care, just do it well. Castlevania is not a Mario game where there is absolutely no possibility of a great story. I'm a sucker for corny/cheesy stuff like the guy-saves-girl, girl-and-guy-marry-in-the-end scenarios and I can barely get even that.

I know all this seems like it should destroy my interest in the series but I can't help screwing myself. Hell, I've never given Metroid a try but all I've heard is the recent Castlevania games are Metroid-esque so I'm about to dive into Zero Mission, Fusion, and plan on buying the NES/SNES Metroids on the Virtual Console (I'm completely skipping all the first-person ones; they get me dizzy). I'll probably finish Harmony of Dissonance (or just completely drop it a few more hours in) and screw myself over by purchasing Portrait of Ruin and Symphony of the Night. *sigh* When will I fall in love with you Castlevania? Is it not meant to be? Will Metroid be there to comfort me? Stay tuned... or not.

---

This was written on 9/6/06 (4:47 AM EST) and posted on 9/8/06 (7:32 PM EST). I have since stopped playing Harmony of Dissonance.

[UPDATE #1: I've given about 1-2 hours to Metroid Zero Mission and I must say Castlevania moves a lot slower. In comparison, I need to slide or dash everytime I want to move quicker but Samus seems to move at a blazing pace.]

Alright, the other day I downloaded Catlevania Symophony of the Night on my 360. I can't stop playing it. I can't believe I realised this late how awesome Castlevania is. Once I get enough money, I'm buying the DS ones, then I'll probably get the new one that just came out on the PSP.

Good for you xombiemonkey, I also downloaded Sotn first it is the best Castlevania game for me, and a great interlude for all the others, I especially loved because the main character is the son of Drac so you get this whole family drama thing!!

You are all wrong. SOTN is a great Castlevania game. But the best one was Dracula X for the PC engine. If you don't know what that is, you should google it. By far the greatest Castlevania game in the series.

I feel soooo old......

I think that's the one (Dracula X) that made its way to the PSP as a bundle with SotN.

Edit: Okay, so it has the Castlevania: Rondo of Blood remake, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood the original version, and Symphony of the Night. Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles has.

I played Dracula X on the PC engine, it was awesome, tell me do you like better the Castlevania Level-by-Level type (like Dracula X) or Explore-and-backtrack type (like SOTN) confused
