Okay, I was looking at the genres list and there is no description for smut. Could someone please add a description?

Smut just seems to be sex, but not extreme amounts of it. Possibly has something to do with the story and how it progresses into it maybe?

Kinda off-topic but when I searched smut and filtered out yaoi, shounen ai, shoujo ai, shoujo and josei I came out with barely any results.

Currently there is only one male oriented manga that has smut in it (i.e shounen/seinen):

Girlfriend

So I'd say smut mostly pretains to shoujo/josei mangas.

seams like a redundant genre. There is already Hentai, Adult and Ecchi. you would think that all the smut would fall into one of those three categories.

Smut is more-or-less "ecchi for girls", though it's more likely to be actual sex and/or sexual situations than boob & panty shots, and it's generally found within shoujo & josei manga.

Just to clarify one point - shoujo, josei, shounen, and seinen aren't really "genres", they're more like demographics - the age & gender that the magazine where the manga originally appeared was aimed at. Within each demographic there are the various genres like smut, gender bender, adventure, ecchi, etc. Filtering out a demographic is going to result in a much shorter list of results than filtering out a genre.

I think the word smut is just another word for porn. The context it is used in on this website seems to be more like, "girl porn." Because most of the time it seems to be with shoujo and josie. Maybe hentai is to smut just as shounen is to shoujo . I dont really know .

I think everyone's missing the point. I'm trying to say that in the genres section there's a basic description for every genre except smut. I just want there to be some kind of description there, and if it's too hard to define, it shouldn't be listed as a genre.

Girlfriend can't be smut. I thought someone removed that already. Isn't smut a Shoujo/Josei term, therefore it cannot be used with Shounen/Seinen? Or else it would've just been named ecchi, if it was with Shounen/Seinen. At least I think so. Neofirehawk explained the term 'smut' once.

and if it's too hard to define, it shouldn't be listed as a genre.

But it's one of those terms that when you see, you basically know what it is (and if you don't you've likely never read the genre before.) *shrugs*

But smut really isn't the same as the other three. Hentai seems to be a lot more like a porn flick-there'll be lots of random sex in weird positions, maybe tentacles or other weird objects will show up-and ecchi kind of translates to breast & panty shots and some groping. Smut's more of a romance novel/sex scene in a movie-the most risque position is still pretty conventional, there's usually a layer of romance-it's hentai but with an attempt at characterization. Adult's anything that's not ok for kids-too broad a catagory, 'cause it includes violence in themes and all sorts of stuff.

Basically in levels of porn:
Hentai >smut>ecchi

Uh, smut's a word that's been around for far too many years- I've seen it come up with reference to romance novels (and it's association with romance novels and the like is partly why it seems to be applied more to shoujo/josei.)

If you want male-aimed smut, try girlfriend.

Male-aimed "smut"? What are you talking about?
"Smut" (when used as a genre) is a term created by Western fans to categorize a trend of shoujo manga that depicts explicit sexual material that began around the early nineties. So, saying that there is male-aimed smut manga (when the word "smut" is used as a term to describe a determinate genre in manga, not as an adjective, of course) is an oxymoron.
And thanks for pointing out girlfriend, I already corrected the series' genre list.

Smut can not be applied to male-aimed manga. (e.g. Shounen/Seinen) That's what I think. *shrugs*

This again? I'm kind of tired of explaining the same things over and over. I'm feeling like I'm wasting my time here since nobody seems to be reading what I write.

And Dr.Love: I indeed corrected girlfriend's genre list but somebody else change it. Now, I'm also tired of correcting genre lists and people changing them back with no apparent reason. I tried once correcting every title I saw and putting some explanation of why I did that change in the series' information page (specifically, I was making a topic of why that series was listed under a determinate genre and demographic and I was urging people to post in the thread if they were going to make any changes and to justify why they were doing it. But I was barely beginning when I had visible problems with a lot of people that didn't really comprehend what made a series belong to a determinate demographic. After some significant event I even got to regret having created those topics in the first place.)
Now, I don't have time to be having large debates of why a title belongs to a determinate genre or demographic every time I change a single genre list, so don't expect that I'm going to be keeping an eye on that series and correcting it every time somebody changes it, because I'm not.
Now, to xombiemonkey: Your question has already been properly answered. This is like the third topic that is made about this. Please, I urge you to use the search feature next time you're going to make a topic of this nature. Thanks.
