A hobby. Just like gaming and music. Different stuff in different times. Animu goes better with alcohol than games and most music, as I don't listen to anything that plays on the dance floor and alcohol makes high frequency sounds harder to hear. When I want to relax a bit, I watch it, because most of my hobbiest are geared towards the hardcore side. I do read mango at times too, but only the psychological stuff keeps me focused long enough to not start doing something else when I am sluggish.

I view anime and manga in somewhat the same way I view any other media I enjoy:

- a hobby, because I enjoy the media I chose
- an escape from reality like when I'm ill or having a hard time I can just jump into a manga and deal with stuff once I've given myself a break
- a way to see things in a new light or to think about new ideas
- my current obsession (I tend to jump headfirst into something and lose track of everything else. Then I find a new obsession, and the cycle continues etc.)

manga and anime to me are things that i see as very obsessive hobbies, but nothing more than that. I enjoy them quite a lot, but if I had a choice to hang out with my friends or stay home and read anime and watch manga, I would go out. I agree with BewareOfArtists that it is a way to escape reality, but it can't so much so that you lose sight of all your homework, goals, and relationships
