We do have an instance of a shinigami wielding and even achieving bankai with his wife's zanpakutou, after all.

Who was that? I only remember two marriages in the Bleach canon material: Byakuya-Hisana and Isshin-Masaki. And I don't remember there ever being an indication that Senbonzakura was originally Hisana's. Someone correct me if I'm wrong (chapter numbers preferred).

Edit: Oh, and Shiba Kaien had a wife too. But nothing there either from my memory.

I think he is speaking about Tousen using the zanpakuto of the woman he loved, but she was not his wife.

I think he is referring to this:

Although it seems to be debated on whether or not its true Tousen uses his loves zanpakutou. He clearly took the zanpakutou of his wife. Kubo has never confirmed or denied this.

Thanks. I didn't even think of him. Looking back, the two swords look exactly the same, so I guess I'm wrong. But the reason I didn't even think about him was that his sword fit him so well. The bankai especially was literally an extension of his condition.

Maybe he took the physical sword and replaced its spirit. Yet another question to be answered. But to me, logic dictates that Ichigo can't have taken his father's zanpakutou while Isshin still has it as well.

Honestly I can accept that someone else can use a zanpakutou of another person. The blade just has to accept the person, too. Most Zanpakutou love there masters so a person like tosen wanting to continue what she stood for is way more understandable then two people that are not blood related having zanpakutou with the same moves, all the way down to the uber power up that only there swords have.
