I have just moved to a new country and unfortunately I no longer have unlimited downloads. Originally I download directly from the translator sites but with the new limit, I now have to watch how much I download stuff. Which takes up more bandwitch: downloading or reading from a manga reader site?

Both consume similar amounts of bandwidth.
Most archived scanlated manga that you download isn't really compressed all that much. As for online readers, it depends on how much the said site compresses the image files, though you'll still be spending bandwidth loading the page templates and ads (unless blocked) and various other stuff that comes along with the page, plus the queries you make each time you click (most ISP's actually count uploaded data into their cap as well, fyi).
In the end, it's a toss-up.
You could try a browser that employs compression. Like the Turbo function in Opera, where it routes traffic through an Opera server where it is compressed (some say as much as 80%) before it gets sent to your computer. I don't use Opera, so can't vouch for the quality of service. You'll have to check if there are similar services/features available for your browser of choicel. Note that it only compresses web pages (of certain formats) and not downloaded files, so online reading might make a stronger case here. Also best to disable ads via an ad-blocker or local hosts file (let's not go into the ethical debate of blocking ads today, shall we) and unneeded scripts and functions/services. No point saving a few kilobytes per page when you've got a Facebook or Twitter app running in the background querying a server constantly.

I see. I use Mozilla Firefox with an ad blocker, but I forgot to account for the actual loading of the site and not just the usually compressed pages. If that's the case, then I'll just continue to download directly. Thanks for replying.

Your ISP should offer extra bandwidth at additional charges, for me it's a extra 50 gig for 5$ a month. Be careful you don't go over your limit, as you usually have to pay a ridiculous amount of money.
