I've never seen one. Manga is always better. Always. There is always so much less in anime adaptations of a manga. Looking back at the days of watching anime before I knew of the slew of manga available, I now see it as a waste of time. Anime adaptations are always lacking a lot from what the manga had. Movie adaptations are worse. Guaranteed. Every time. You can take that shit to the bank laugh

I'll second FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, and FMA Brotherhood just so I'm not the negative Nancy putting down everyone's suggestions laugh
Elfen Lied was good, but, like normal, the manga is better. I'd probably cut my wrists if I heard the opening song again. It's all sooo damn depressing. Gave me quite the thorough mindfucking. So bad it may have left lesions lol. Oh God... it's coming back to me! **carves words into thigh; draws on wall with blood**

As for other suggested anime that are "MUST SEE," Every one I've seen listed that I've watched and read is much, much better in manga format. Berserk loses most of the gore and detail and is 15 years old. Same goes for Claymore in the gore and detail department. Monster is droll, manga is better, but not much. The last 20 or so chapters pissed me off. Ending was anti-climactic and overall crap.

detroit metal city
manages to be just as funny and sometime even more funny than the manga

Are you trolling? The only good part of the DMC anime is the last couple minutes when the protagonist becomes his alter ego (the lead singer to a death metal band) and he acts crazy. It's just 15 minutes of so much fast-paced dialogue that it ruins the story. I'd highly suggest reading the manga.

Juuni Kokuki (Also known as Juuni kokki or The Twelve Kingdoms)
Awesome fantasy with action, drama, suspense and character growth. The original light novels are fantasy horror but the anime lack a bit of the horror. Or maybe it's just me?

Kemono no Souja Erin (also known as Beast Player Erin)
Also fantasy but it contain more drama than action.

Seirei no Moribito
Say what you want people, but this is absolutely a must watch even if people complain about the low quality production or whatever flaws you find. Even if there aren't that much of it, but the fighting scenes are quite exciting for they have a touch or realism. smile

Sora no Woto
K-ON! mixed with a post apocalyptic sci-fi military mecha anime? Sure thing but throw out the action out of mecha and military and insert slice of life and comedy and you get Sora no Woto! biggrin

Haibane Renmei
A dramatic fantasy slice of life with a dark tone.

Aria the Animation + the Natural + Arietta (OVA) + the Origination
a sci-fi slice of life about three girls trying to become undine in a town called Neo Venezia on Aqua (known as Mars to us). There is a plot and every episode is about something. Characters grow and get deeper with every season and then it end and leave you to want more. sad Well, that happened to me.

Bakemonogatari
Mystery, supernatural stuff, some action, romance and lots of dialog. The romance isn't that heavy though nor is the action.
It's about a high school kid named Koyomi Araragi which is a former vampire that accidentally creates a harem of chicks by helping them with their supernatural problems. eek Well, that is one way to see it at least. bigrazz

Jigoku Shoujo
Episodic psychological horror with supernatural stuff. While at it try the sequels Futakomori and Mitsuganae.

Mardock Scramble
Action sci-fi similar to Ghost in a Shell. there are three movies, The First Compression, The Second Combustion and The Third Exhaust. I haven't seen the third yet but I'm sure it's awesome. biggrin

I can write a wall of text on how I'm despairing for some stuff be nominated in a "must see" topic but well, let's skip that. Let's only say that nobody said Kigeki, which made me very sad sad

But I pretty much agree with blakraven66 list. Despite not everything being a must see there, there are some true classic mentioned, which others failed to mention so far, so I'd start from his list. Though there is a huge miss, which is Kaiba, to me the best dystopian sci-fi "thing" ever made.

And since nobody mentioned it so far, I'm gonna also add Shinkai Makoto's Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho, aka Beyond the Clouds.

Throwing in my two cents:
Phantom of Inferno
Serial Experiments Lain - Good food for thought
Akira - Very influential when it hit the West
Eve no Jikan
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Detective Conan
Hosoda Mamoru's recent works

Seconding:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica - 3 episode rule
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu - brainless fun
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai
Miyazaki's films with Studio Ghibli
Everything by Type-Moon (visual novels > anime by miles though)
