You're welcome. It's written by Shirodaira Kyou, who is one of my favorite authors in terms of storytelling. He's also the author of Spiral and Zetsuen no Tempest, the first is a detective/mystery story (so I don't know if it suits your tastes), the latter should be something that you could like since it's kinda similar to Vampire Juujikai (with vampires out and magicians in ), but I didn't mention it before because it's still ongoing. But if you liked Vampire Juujikai so much, you should probably put it on your wish list (there is also an anime currently airing btw).

@Reid1: I actually checked out that mangaka after reading Vampire Juu jikai, maybe the only thing that made me feel weird was the introduction of Alien invasion in the story but other than that Vampire Juu jikai is awesome. As for Spiral, I kept on putting that on hold since it's too wordy, but seeing she is the mangaka, I might start reading it. Zetsuen no Tempest is currently in my downloads folder. I'm waiting for it to be completed. but yea 1 quick question regarding Spiral, there is romance in there right?

For both (1) and (2) Maison ikkoku, since seinen was acceptable as well and I didn't spot it on your list.

It is also a comedy of errors that shares elements with other Takahashi series as well as a slice of life story, but it is still (arguably) very valid as a romance manga as well. It certainly moved me back in the day, when I was very much an insensitive lump for most of the time.

I'm actually a bit suprised that Lorska didn't mention it, since he seems to have read everything, ever I guess he doesn't consider it having a high enough % of romance.

@Baalzebup: looks kinda old to me coz of the art no is it really worth the read?

That is a highly subjective question. I find it a very worthy read indeed, but you must keep in mind that I've read it first back when the standard for the art level was lower. By modern standards, the art is very old and it shows, especially at first. As is usual, it does get better farther along, but it will never look "pretty" or anything even resembling modern.

All I can say is that I've read and seen quite a few manga and anime with romance being a major factor in them (though I'm also a heavy consumer of other genres as well) and that I rank Maison Ikkoku among my all time favorites. I'm sure there is some genuine bias mixed in it due to my relatively early exposure to it, but I don't think its popularity is for no reason and Maison Ikkoku does have a large recognition as a manga classic, both for comedy and romance purposes.

It does definitely feature the conclusive, satisfying ending w/ epilogue that you asked for. It also features the "freeze frame" moments you ask for, quite a few times. Some comical, others very much not so.

If you can't get over how it looks, I'll consider it a shame but that is that. If you do get over it and don't mind the slapstick / comedy of errors that is mixed in, you'll find a story that features good character growth for multiple characters and some sweet romance with satisfying conclusion.

Edit. Oh yeah. Remember that there are levels to slapstick as well. Love Hina, this is not.
Edit2. 'nother "Oh yeah": It is very comedy heavy at first. The % of romance increases gradually the farther you get.

Baalzebup: Thanks a lot for the recommendation. Well it's not like I don't like oldies style of artwork, I actually find some old manga romance quite unique like Kanata Kara, so I might give this title a shot. Thanks! Since you metioned there are a couple of freeze frame moments, that made me curious! biggrin

These ones stand out for me at least smile

I didn't see Sora Log on your list, it has a lovely extra chapter at the end, would fit 1. Maybe 2 and 3.

Boku to Watashi no Henai Jijou is seinen, but the romance is strong. Fits 1, 2 and 3.

Crossroad for 1, 2 and 3.

Papillon - Hana to Chou has plenty of number 3, I think.

You have Oyayubi kara Romance in your waiting for translation list - that is actually completely released in english and fairly cheap on eBay, good for 3.

For on-going ones: I have to second Hajimari no Niina - very very lovely. Also Seiyuu-Ka! works well for 3 - the first two volumes are fairly bad, but it gets very good. I don't know how much longer it has to go though, I think the scanlations are not much behind the original release.

No, I don't remember any romance despite some one-sided crush and some chemistry between the two main characters. I'd definitely not suggest it if you're looking just for romance, because while Vampire Juujikai and Zetsuen no Tempest main characters are driven in their journey by feelings of love, Spiral's main character is driven to discover a mystery about his brother's disappearance, so it's not that kind of love that drive him.
Oh, and Kyou Shirodaira is a male. He only writes the stories, while the artists drawing them are all females. smile wink grin

Absolute Witch - fits your good ending really well, I promise! It has good twists and all, and the "sudden" thing you're referring. At first I didn't want to read it cause it didn't look appealing enough for me; but believe me, it was good smile

P.S. Character growth included.
