2013's combined 4th/5th issue of Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine is announcing on Wednesday that Yoshinobu Yamada is ending his Cage of Eden (Eden no Ori) manga series in three more chapters. If Yamada does not take a break, the manga will end in the 8th issue on January 23.

The story follows a boy named Akira and other plane crash survivors who try to stay alive on an island, despite exotic creatures and threats from within the survivors.

Yamada launched the manga in the magazine in 2008, and Kodansha published the 20th volume this month. Kodansha Comics, the manga imprint of Kodansha USA Publishing, released the eighth volume of the manga in North America this month.

Yeah, I'm wondering that myself. I don't know how far behind the scanlations are, but I hope it's a fair amount - there's still a lot of loose threads.

The latest chapter is chapter 181, so it'll end at chapter 184.

That's going to be pretty abrupt IMO. Hopefully they can end it w/o rushing it too badly. They need to at least get some closure with Akira and Rion (kiss?). I don't really care if it shows them getting off the island as long as that happens. smile

That doesn't sound good, I don't think they're going to be able to cover the ending with how the story is going on currently. Sounds like another Negima ending again.

I just hope that the announcement is a hoax though like how animenewsnetwork was fooled into thinking that Claymore ended because of a mistake on the publisher's part

Isn't latest chapter 182, and if you add 3 more chapters won't it end in 185?

Moving on, isn't the conclusion quite rushed? I mean, we were all expecting (or at least I was) that they would find the mistery of the island and leave it eventually. They did find the mistery but if next chapter is about Sengoku's mother, in 2 chapters they should leave?
I'm thinking this story might be ending quite tragic... thoughts?

Was it axed? I thought the author decided to end it. Hope it has a memorable ending though, coz it took so much time to build the premises so if it abruptly ends, it will be a waste.

wait dont we only have 17 volumes scanlated? since there are 20 volumes overall that means we still got 3 more volumes to scanlate until we read the ending. So doesnt that mean we still have quite a lot of chapters to read left?
edit: nevermind, its up to date on scanlating, sorry sad

I'm actually quite pleased at the situation. Cage of Eden is a good series but it started to drag a lot and I mean A LOT to extend the story and end chapters in cliffhangers week after week after week. To me, every good story has an end. If you postpone continuously your ending, you're dragging down the quality of your series almost inevitably.

So the series being ended (or canned, are we clear on which?) to me isn't a bad thing. It means the author is finally forced to deliver on the mysteries he introduced instead of dicking us around for years to come. That being said, he already introduced most of the elements to bring a good conclusion and with 182 being out, this confirms it will end with chapter 185.

My only worry is that after the entire truth is revealed, what will, or what can they do? I can't see a good conclusion without a Deux Ex Machina ending. So, I'll be expecting a tragic ending... It will depend a lot on the author because some can pull it quite well while others fail horribly at it.

Well, the manga has been going down and down for a long time now, it's not really that surprising. As time went, it had less and less drama and mystery and more fanservice. I was thinking of eventually dropping it anyway, so personally I'm not displeased by Cage of Eden getting axed.

Isn't is possible that it a sequel will be made. Bloody Monday has 3 seasons and Rosario + Vampire has 2 seasons.
