This week's poll is from our member jacob66. This poll is actually a mix of 2 polls back in 2008, and based on those results, I'm gonna predict that "Lots of volumes with long chapters" will win. But who knows? I could be wrong

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Question: What font type do you prefer for reading scanlations?
Choices:
Wild Words - votes: 744 (6.9%)
Manga Temple - votes: 164 (1.5%)
Anime Ace - votes: 440 (4.1%)
CC Meanwhile - votes: 19 (0.2%)
DigitalStrip - votes: 45 (0.4%)
CC Comiccrazy - votes: 26 (0.2%)
Blambot Casual - votes: 28 (0.3%)
Arial - votes: 226 (2.1%)
Arial Black - votes: 81 (0.8%)
Calibri - votes: 138 (1.3%)
Comic Sans MS - votes: 723 (6.7%)
Verdana - votes: 68 (0.6%)
Times New Roman - votes: 189 (1.8%)
Webdings - votes: 75 (0.7%)
Tahoma - votes: 64 (0.6%)
Helvetica - votes: 69 (0.6%)
I prefer a font not listed above - votes: 160 (1.5%)
Fonts matter, but I don't know their names - votes: 5693 (53%)
Fonts don't matter at all to me - votes: 1795 (16.7%)
There were 10747 total votes.
The poll ended: January 26th 2013

Of the results for the actual fonts, we have Wild Words, Comic Sans MS, and Anime Ace (in that order). I'm not sure if tons of people just voted for Comic Sans MS to troll, or perhaps that's the only font that common people feel they see in manga. I just can't believe that it's that good of a font...

PS: I believe this poll has caused the most people ever (so far) to demean me and treat me like trash

Aww, you know we love ya smile wink grin

(And I probably suspect the reason Comic Sans MS got so many votes was because most of the people confused it with Wild Words lol)

lamb, everyone loves you here.... Seems like your prediction for this poll is gonna be correct, and well no one would be surprised if that's the case.

You just want your series to have enough chapters/volumes to cover all the details, no matter how small they are, and offer a complete and proper ending. While short stories (with less volumes) can be good, they often lack the space to offer enough character development. I have seen many seinen who suffered from this problem.

So I would go with "Lots of volumes with long chapters". No point in going with short chapters who always ends with cliffhangers. Of course, by lots of volumes, I don't mean 40+ where there is hardly any story development *cough* * shonen* roll Ah! no another Bleach,Naruto and Fairy tale please embarrassed

Aw, I'm sure they didn't really mean it.

I went with few volumes with long chapters since that's what I honestly prefer. Well, I actually prefer like 3-8 vols, so that would be somewhere of middle length. But still. Maybe it's because I feel intimidated to start new manga that I see has already 15+ volumes (what I imagine as lots of volumes). If the story doesn't uselessly drag just to keep it going longer, I do like long stories though. Either way, long chapters. I hate when I wait week or month for new chapter just to get <15 pages, no development and only cliffhangers.

It's scary how many people voted for Comic Sans. no

Just depends on the type of manga, so since I like shorter series but a good deal of exposition per chapter I'll go for "Just a few volumes with long chapters".

I like webtoons like on Naver and Daum. They have often an optimal story length.

A story needs to be long enough for exploiting the plot ( their are also very good short stories, but in general it only works out with a romantic or comedic plot, for example mystery and adventure it wouldn't be possible. Mystery needs a deep plot, and adventure, well you can't finish this type of story on your front door.)

I prefer long chapters, short chapters are too much forced and their is also a common issue with long series having fillers in it. Long series with short chapters tends to have a failing/forced ending too (Cage of Eden is a good example).

I also prefer longer chapters, as short chapters gives problems to get the plot back, and when you find it back with it's action it's finished. none

I voted few volumes with long chapters, because in my experience few long series manage to not become a total drag and unneccessarily stretch the story. And ofcourse longer chapters are better than super short ones, I mean, seriously, who PREFERS short chapters? roll eyes

EDIT: I consider anything up to about 5 volumes to be short.

Lot of volumes with short chapters. Cause those short chapters give us a lot more monthly than long chapters. Weekly releases give us at least 70+ pages a month where as monthly releases only give us 25-40 pages a month.

I wish the choices were more like short, medium or long number of volumes. The choices "just a few volumes" makes me think like 1-5 and "lots of volumes" sounds like 20+. I don't like most short stories, so the poll automatically makes me choose "lots of volumes". Its just not accurate to what I like and it won't surprise me if "lots of volumes with long chapters" wins.

I don't care for stuff with really long volumes because usually its overstayed its visit and there's a lot of filler. Series like Bleach (57 vol), History's Strongest disciple Kenichi (49 vol), City Hunter (39 vol), etc, start to grate after awhile. If its comedy the same gag volume after volume goes from funny to being a real drag. Hell, even with stuff I really like such as Berserk (37 vol) starts to frustrate me. While long series tend to drag or have too much filler with the short series that's maybe 1-3 volumes it often, but not always, feels like there wasn't enough to it. Usually I feel that character development suffers in really short series or there isn't enough to the background. There are exceptions and those tend to have a very tight focus on its subject, but its not often the norm. Personally, I tend to prefer things of about medium length (10-15 vol). Stuff like Parasyte (10 vol), Blame! (10 vol), Bokurano (11 vol), Freesia (12 vol), Bamboo Blade (14 vol), Gunslinger Girl (15 vol), etc. It doesn't mean that I'm always happy with how it ends, but 10-15 volumes tends to be my sweet spot.

Ideally lots of volumes with long chapters, but since long chapters usually mean long wait times between releases/publications, lots of volumes with short chapters are nice too.

Idk really but lots of volumes are somewhat discouraging when starting a new manga, especially if you feel so so about it... even if they are short chapters.

That's really the shounen/shoujo genres in a nutshell. Shounen typically has many volumes with short chapters, and shoujo typically has few volumes with long chapters!

It's not the length that matters, but the quality of the story. Having said that, I tend to favour long mangas, but not ones which never end.
