NO ECCHI!
NO YAOI!
NO MANHWA!

Basically, I want someone who's stable in their power. As for what kind of power, I don't care. It can be sports, magic, martial art, intelligence, anything. You know how a lot of times, especially shounen and sports mangas, make the protagonists have bursts of power, explain them as undefeated and so extremely powerful... only to find out in a few chapters that all is all but an illusion. In truth the protagonist is extremely weak, lacks experience, wins every fight only because he's the main character, but has this 1 in 100 years latent abilities.

I don't mind if he, or she, lacks power and experience at the moment, but he or she should be aware of that, and avoid needless trouble and focus on training themselves. I suppose that can be fitted under intelligence, but you get it, no matter how bad, they just can't be too weak can they? If they are, make it up with the brains.

Hmm... I can't think of a good example atm, but I think what's out is pretty obvious. Shounen mangas with reckless heros, hot-headed chars who doesn't know their place from sports mangas, all of those are out.

I don't mind shounen-ai, and I don't mind rape. Anything written by Koreans are manhwa, I don't see how webcomics can be excluded, so none of those. Ecchi distorts the human anatomy and turns girls into pigs... so no matter how good the story is I don't want them.

Read Gintama. Definitely.
Not only is it hilarious, but the main character definitely suits your criteria. There are no training arcs, and I feel the manga directly addresses the problem you speak of. However, it is a gag comic (most of the time), so if you don't like it, don't read.

I wanted to suggest Berserk, but after reading the last line, I don't think you would like it. It doesn't has ecchi or fanservice but there is one rape scene. And that once scene is pretty heavy..... The manga is a good one though.

Vampire Juujikai The lead has both potential and experience.
Rurouni Kenshin The lead has a lot of expierence..... Many people like it and call it masterpiece, but I really don't like it.

history's strongest disciple kenichi is basic get stronger fight stronger but he does it all through hardwork and his teachers keep telling him he sucks so it's steady growth with clear room for improvement. hajime no ippo is similar.

the protagonist from h2 is good at baseball and stays good at baseball throughout

i guess the protagonist from kami no mizo shiru sekai is smart and really good at what he does

so would even hokuto no ken count where he's pretty experienced to begin with?

besides the first two, the characters are all pretty exceptional to begin with though

Since you say "any kind of power" I'd point out Spice & Wolf since Lawrence's merchant intelligence is stable and the fruit of years of experience. He also improves by learning from his mistakes and he tries to avoid situations like fighting because he's aware he's not fit for them. I think a good example of this is the situation where
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
he has to rescue Holo and he relies on the merchant company power; Holo gets angry with him because instead of being the first person to gallantly break in her prison cell to rescue her he was waiting grounded down in a hole but he answers her that he's just a merchant and he did was he thought would be best to save her
.

Gintama... I've tried watching the anime quite a few times, but well, I gave up. I don't think the manga's gonna make it any better.

Vampire Juujikai and Rurouni Kenshin both fit, well, Kenshin's a bit on the edge, but I already read (and loved) both of them.

I totally forgot about Spice & Wolf! It's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks for reminding me! I think I did... but not sure if I read the manga already, the anime was great with an unsatisfying ending though.

Hokuto no Ken, I've read the Shirogane no Senja Gaiden, loved it. Not really fond of Kenshiro... but I guess I'll go and read it sooner or later.

Will check out the others, though I get the impression I already read h2... or was it the anime? Can't remember. Hajime no Ippo's art kinda makes me back off though lol.

I think the ending of the second season of the anime was satisfying enough. It's the end of book 5 of the novel btw (which is better than manga/anime even if I think they're good adaptions). Are you talking about that or the end of first season? Just keep in mind that they covered 4 books out of 16... and judging for how the story developed from there I don't think they could have picked out a better point to end the anime considering the number of episodes.
The manga is A LOT behind, so if you don't like to read parts that are already covered in the anime you should wait until a tenth/dozen of volumes are out (volume 6 is the end of the first season of the anime). If you're not against reading books, the novels are truly a great read so I warmly recommend them.

Will keep that in mind. Can't remember if it was season 1 or 2, been quite a while. As for the manga, yea, I realized... The first time I read the manga, I dropped it for that exact reason... -sigh-
Well, with nothing else to do, the manga wasn't bad at all, even having watched the anime already.

How about Shamo? The guy does have potential, but gets even better with practice. And if you don't mind mature, this manga is pretty hardcore.

Baby steps

Well.. the mc does have a handy talent... but that's actually pretty common among human beings...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
He has great dynamic vision... which is pretty darn common if you consider athletes of most sports

But what's pretty neat about this manga is... the mc actually has to work his ass off to get better... and as humanly as possible !

No sudden bursts of strength... no "1 in a hundred year" power... no godly mentor either...

So i guess you should give it a try... laugh
